You power supply smoked on the TV.
The power supply will need to be fix because there are not many service parts available.
Today's electronics devices are basically made disposable when they break down.

The TV started smoking. Thought it might be dust. doesn't appear to be.

Your tv is burning part of it's electronics. Turn it off and unplug it. Either take it to a repair ship or replace it.

GE D52GW12 52 in. Rear Projection HDTV-Ready

i agree with you about the fire hazard and i had many feedbacks about this tv, mostly conscious about fire hazard too.

i would suggest that in light of owning a high-def tv, it would be significantly appropriate to place this in a room with airconditioning as to diminish the heat this hdtv produces.

about the issue of the hdtv turning off, if you suspect the transformer and other parts to be the reason for the tv to malfunction, why not bring it to a certified service center which handles GE hdtv. i would say that it may be a pain but as to think of the outcome, it may be worth it.

hope this helps.

Lamp nearing end of life

Your best bet is to get a good TV Repair guy out to your house, that has the Sony Service Code Manual for your set. The TV Tech can access your Service Codes and clear that message out, and possibly make some adjustments that can eliminate the yellowish hue.

The yellowish hue could also come from smoking in the house or burning candles. I have 2 friends that still smoke and had the same problem with their Rear Projection Sony set. When the tech took their set apart he found the brown tar & the soot from the candles had covered the lens and much of the lamp area. They ended up getting a new set because of what it would have cost them to fix & clean the old one up.

There are at least 2 or 3 fans that pull air into every Rear Projection set. The air is pushed out the back of the set to keep it cool, so if they are sucking in dirty air, it will cover the electronics very quickly and greatly shorten the life of the set.

This is not as much of a problem for the newer "Flat Panel" (non-projection) sets because they usually do not need fans. They just let the heat rise throu the vents in the top of the cabinet.

Samsung 42" rear projection HD tv issue

Not knowing what the technician found and the location you live in, it would be difficult to determine the price of repair. Although, for just a convergence repair (The most common problem with rear projection televisions) it seems a little steep but not much more than the normal repair. How did you know where the resistor lying at the bottom went? This model also has a history of tubes leaking onto the boards. On the lighter side: Chop sticks are not a normal tool found in technician's repertoire. I have discussed this with my technicians. If you have more questions on this, please feel free to contact me on this repair.
