Re: Color ink runs out too fast
Well..only way to do this, is to set your printing preferences, from the applications you use, for black or grey scale printing only. That should remove any signal to color printers to use that cartridge.
be aware, that print cartridges that sit idle, can clog too, so when you do need them, they MAY not be accessible for your needs.

The KODAK All-in-One Printer uses an advanced built-in printhead. The system is designed to provide excellent image and text quality, while eliminating the need to purchase new printheads every time you replace inkcartridges, and saving you money. The printing system requires that both the black and color inkcartridges be installed to print. If either cartridge is not installed or is out of ink, the printer or printhead will not print correctly.
Install the color a new cartridge, avoid damage to the print head.

Ink is a lubricant for the print heads. Some color ink is used even if you only print in black or vice versa. If you printed with a color missing, you could destroy that print head from the friction of running without ink to lubricate it. That's why most printers won't allow you to print with a color missing even if you aren't using it.
If you allow a color to go empty, the residual ink in the head could clog and become permanently blocked. You would never be able to print that color again. So always replace ink cartridges as soon as they are empty.
Leaving your printer on takes very little power. Every so often the printer sends a signal to cycle the ink in the heads so it doesn't clog. If you turn your printer off, the next time you turn it on it will do a cleaning which wastes a lot of ink. The excess ink is soaked up by the waste pad beneath the printer. When the waste pad is full, the printer stops working. Unless you want to spend more than the cost of the printer or waste a lot of time on a messy cleanup you will end up throwing the printer out. So shutting it off actually shortens its life.
If you leave the printer off for extended periods of time, the ink in the heads will clog and you will have to throw the printer away. Someone I know with a Canon (though this can happen with any ink-jet) had to have the heads replaced twice within the first few months before the Canon tech told her to stop turning it off. Since then it has worked perfectly for over a year.
How to clear blocked print heads: -leave the printer on for a day -run several head cleanings and print the nozzle check pattern -if that doesn't fix it, remove the cartridge(s) from the blocked head and drop alcohol where the ink enters the printer. -reinsert the cartridges -run one head cleaning -wait about an hour then run some head cleanings. -dip the print heads in Isopropyl Alcohol overnight, which you can buy from chemist
If after that still doesn't work, your heads may be clogged to the point where they need repair or replacement, which will probably cost more than a new printer.
Well, here's what Canon says. In my experience, you can expect to go through a black cartridge in about 500 sheets of paper, less for the color. Our Canon uses ink quickly. The printing speed is pretty fast for a printerthat is for black-and-white documents around 8.4 ipm and a color document printspeed of about 4.8 ipm. While for 4R size photo print takes about 43 seconds.Canon PIXMA MP496 resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi for (max). It is said the all-in-one, because already integrated between print, scan and copy. For copies, this printer has a speed of around 7.6 cpm for black and white documents, while for the color is obtained at about 2.6 cpm.
It depends what type of things you are printing. If you are printing text, you should be able to print more pages. If you are printing photos, you are using more ink per page. If you use more of one color, you may also run out quicker. You didn't say if you were running out of ink in the black or the color or both cartridges. The black cartridge is rated at 200 pages and the color cartridge is rated at 150 pages. This is based on printing pages that may differ drastically from what you actually print. Here's a web link that explains this in more detail.
Next time you buy a printer, spend a little more and find a printer that has a larger cartridge (check the number of ml (milliliters) in the cartridge). These printers cost a bit more but you will save on the cost of the ink. Cartridges all cost roughly the same regardless of how much ink they have. You can also look at websites that rate each printer cost per black and white and color pages.
You can try to change your print quality to a lower setting. This saves a lot on toner. If you are not printing for anything super important you can set some printers to "fast draft" or "draft" quality and that saves a ton. I personally dont usually need to print anything of high quality so I went to my local "Everything" store(not sure if I should use company names) and bought an HP, the cheapest color printer they had which was $30.00 The black and color cartridges together cost about the same as the printer. But I use the lowest setting which is the "fast draft" setting and set it to print in black ink only, and only change that when I NEED something in color and it uses very little and prints very fast.
The X3650 uses the No. 37 tri-color cartridge, i.e. 3 colors in 1 cartridge. Unfortunately, when one color runs out, the cartridge has to be replaced. When you change printer, you might want to consider a printer that uses at least 4 separate ink cartridges (black, cyan, magenta, yellow). This way you need to replace only the cartridge that runs out.
See this link. Type "print using black ink" in the Search box and click the Search button. Select the appropriate option for your computer's OS. Note that you can only do this using plain paper. (I think the printer will still use a little color ink when doing print head cleanings. If you leave the printer powered on all the time, this will reduce the number of print head cleanings.)
Yes, you can print out in black from a color cartridge, however it is not advised as you will run out of colored ink twice as fast as it combines all the colors to get black. However it works great when your in a pinch and need black ink. Just go to your printer properties when you print and the option will be in there someware.
