The autoplay function sets a default action everytime you wish to do something with a media file.
So if you put a blank cd in then you can set your cd burning software to launch, or if you plug a memory card or portable hard drive you can set the pc to open the drive,or open your image viewer to view pictures.
If you have not set your autoplay functions, a box will usually just pop up asking what would you like to do

Windows Vista's AutoPlay options are a great improvement over Windows XP in terms of flexibility, but unfortunately there are so many options that it can be confusing, especially since there's no specific mention of USB Flash drives in the options. Open your Control Panel, and then click on "Play CDs or other media automatically" to open the AutoPlay dialog. Disable AutoPlay Globally. The quickest way to disable AutoPlay entirely is to just uncheck the box for "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices", which should usually work.

MAXTOR 320 AUTOPLAY Problem

Another way to disable autoplay in XP (don't know if this works in other versions of Windows) is to click Start -> Run -> type "msconfig" -> click the Services tab -> and uncheck the selection called "Shell Hardware Detection". This will disable autoplay for not only all of your CD-ROM drives, but any other form of removable media (ie memory cards from your digital camera).

About the dvd drive in acer laptop

If you have recently accepted all updates from Windows Update, the AutoRun / AutoPlay may have possibly been shut off.

A pictorial is available at the link below for configuring these options:

Also, there is a common issue with CD/DVD drives suddenly not being recognized, please follow the instructions on this site, starting with Fix It, then the Manual instructions, and the final instructions.

These procedures should solve your issues.

External Harddrives not working with autoplay anymore

Open up Windows Explorer. Attach one of the drives to the computer. If it shows up as a new drive in Explorer (it may take a second or two), the problem would be with your Autoplay settings. One of the media types on the drive may be configured to "do nothing," so it would appear to do nothing if you are only looking for the autoplay window to pop up.

Auto Play

With the drive plugged in, go to My Computer, and right click on your drive. Select Properties from the menu, and click on the Autoplay tab. Click on the "Select Action to Perform..." and select "Take No Action" from the menu. That should stop Windows from ever asking you what to do with the drive in the future.

The AutoPlay Wizard does not launch when I connect my camera

Description When I connect my FinePix camera to my computer, the AutoPlay Wizard does not launch as shown in the manual. I have Windows XP and I have installed the FinePix Viewer software. Cause AutoPlay is a Windows XP feature. The AutoPlay setting may not be working properly in your Operating system. This situation is not the result of a faulty camera or FinePix Viewer software. Solution We suggest running the Microsoft AutoPlay Repair Wizard utility which is available as a free download from the Microsoft Download Center. The AutoPlay Repair Wizard scans your computer devices to find defective AutoPlay settings, and attempts to fix those it finds. To download this utility, please go to the Microsoft Download Center and enter "AutoPlay" in the Keyword box.
