Acer 5720 I am disappointed that in less than 5 months of the purchase date my laptop is not working!!! I use dial up (I know, I know)- and when I dial up; the modem does not connect. I hear the modem dialing, then I hear "dead silence"; then a recording saying "if you would like to make a call please hang up and dial again". Let me add, I know the issue is NOT my phone line as I have tried to connect at my home, as well as at my mom's house as well as in a third location-my job- all in different towns; and run into the same problem. If anyone can offer some advice, it will truly be appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds like one of 2 things are incorrect in your dialup settings.
Firstly the phone number you are trying to dial is not correct.
Secondly the area code that is set for the modem is incorrect.
Also check that there is no number in the Dial "x" number" to access an outside line. If you are dialing from inside a company for example, most of the time you need to press 0 to get the dial tone to make a call. If you are calling from home this is not needed.

If you were dialing the right number you would at least get a computer tone from the other end trying to negotiate a speed setting for the modem.

Open your modems properties in Control Panel (Start - Settings - Control Panel) and check those first.

Please post back any results

I have a funny feeling it is your settings as predicted.

It is most likely dialing the number BEFORE it gets a dial tone. The first few numbers will not be dialed and you will end up with your recorded message since it is not a complete number.

Hmm..well..this maybe as simple as the phone number setting in your dial up application..do you have call waiting or voicemail on that line? You may need to set the phone dialer to compensate for that issue.

on your laptop, there is only one place to put the phone line, right?

if you go to start, programs, accessories, communication

    there's an icon called dialer

open that, enter a local phone number and see if that works. We may have a bad modem in your computer.

Acer Aspire 5720 - was on the internet when display fuzzed out and then turned black, now have no display only fuzzy black/grey screen. Can you tell me what the problem is?

Unplug your laptop and remove the battery from it, and wait 5 minutes, that should drain any remaining power from the laptop, re-attach the battery and the power cord, and turn it on. It should work fine again.

if not, let me know.

My acer aspire 5720 cursor is stucked in the middle ,please help me to unlock and there is no unlock button near pad

JUst use the driver cd that came with the laptop ...and insert it and reinstall the driver for the touch pad..This will make it functional again ..Or , if you do not have a drivers cd go to acer.com and under support feature look for your model and operation system ..and download the driver for the touch pad..and run it to insdtallagain ..This should fix the issue if the pad is not physically corrupted..
Another method is to engage the system restore..and restore the system to an earlier stage when the pad was functional ..For to do that go to start ..all programs ...accessories ..system tools ...system restore..
Choose on the calendar a highlight date ..but be sure the date chosen is one you know for sure the system worked perfectly ..and click restore..
The computer will restart and restore to the date you selected... and will work again ..
good luck and have a nice day !

USB ports won't work

Sounds like some of the ports on the motherboard are starting to go bad.

You can try doing a system restore back to a date when they were working all properly.

If not you might want to save the important information off of the hard drive and wipe it out and reinstall the OS and the drivers. If on a fresh install the usb ports are still not working properly then you know the motherboard is faulty.

Need to replace cd/dvd rom

Is the laptop still under manufacturer's warranty?
Was it purchased on a credit-card that offers an "extended" warranty?
If not, then purchase an external CD/DVD unit, because that will be less expensive than buying a replacement from the manufacturer, and paying a qualified computer-technician to disassemble your laptop, remove the "dead" drive, and connect the "new" drive.
