Question about Technics SUV500 2-Channel Amplifier

1 Answer

SU-V460 cuts out at high volumes

I have had this amp a few years now with no problems, now when i turn it moderately loud (over half way), its fine for 20 seconds then it cuts out, the red light above current drive also goes out. Only one speaker gets sound through it, the other does but very very quietly so to hear it at all you must put balance all the way to the left, then crank it, at which point it dies again. Any help would be fantastic as me this amp has done me proud in the past.

Hi samipoyo

You need to check the amp for dry solder joints about the output stages. These amps are notorious for soldering going bad. I would set about re-soldering the entire output stage.

I have the same TECHNICS SU A900 MKII as you are talking about and it always runs warm I think using 4R speakers instead of 8R speakers should solve the problem and actually I am thinking of switching to 4R as well.

My NAD C326BEE amp goes into protection mode at moderate volume

The protection only should come on, when the power amplifier has to give more current than it can deliver. (electronic fuse)
If in the music is a lot of subsonic, sound, so low you can't hear and your speakers can't produce, this could cause the problem. Normal CD players will cut of all frequencies beneath 20 Hz, but it could be your PC is giving everything from 1 Hz and above.
I would certainly try to play some music over a CD player and check if that would solve your problem. Not sure if that works, what you could do to suppress the sub sonic in the computer music.

I have a Technics SU-V460 integrated amplifier, and the left channel (speaker) keeps "dropping" out . I have to turn the volume right up in order for it to "kick" back in. Would this be...

There are three possible problems with your system. The first, and cheapest to fix, is that the wire connecting the left channel is faulty. To test this, unplug the wire from the back of the amp and put a new one in, then play some music BEFORE putting everything back into it's respective place. If the speaker doesn't cut out anymore, problem solved! Speaker wire is very cheap too. If the problem persists, try connecting one of your other speakers that you know works to the input. If that speaker cuts out as well, then the amplifier is the faulty component. That will cost some money to repair (between $50-$150 depending on where you go, excluding the price of a new amplifier). If the speaker you know is not faulty works when plugged into the left channel, then the only other option is that the original left channel speaker is faulty. This could cost between $25-$100 to get repaired, excluding the cost of a new speaker. It will not be as costly as a new amp, but will definitely cost more than a new speaker cable.

Loud schreikin noise and cuts off.

it sounds as thought the main-board of the TV is arching or shorting out. This is due to a faulty component in the power section of the TV . It is about to completely go out.
The main board need to be checked for bad components.
