this happened to my machine, I had to get a repair guy out in the end and he said it was the heating element had gone and that was why the cycle wouldn't move on as it could not heat the water to right temp. he charged me £60 to repair and for part, still a lot cheaper than hotpoint though. try to get a local guy, hotpoint charge £100 basic.
check if heating by putting on as hot wash and feeling the door. if no heat, check continuity thro the heater - modern heaters have a non-resettable cut-out in them which can cause problems.
