You will need a network cable (cat5) if you have wirless you will have network card at the back of the pc spare, if you dont you will need a network expansion card, plug the cable into the xbox network socket, it looks a bit like a phone socket, and plug the other end into the pc.
The best windows for doing this is windows vista if you are using wirless internet because it allows you to bridge a wireless and cable connection together, windows xp will not allow this.
Goto network connections, goto start and bring up the menu and click settings, then click network connections, you should have two or more connections, 1 wireless and 1 wired, which will be your xbox, you will need to bridge connections, to do the you will have to highlight the both connections by holding CTRL and left clicking on 1 and then the other, now right click on the highlighted connections, a drop down menu should appear, with a option to bridge connections, left click that and a bridge icon should appear in the window showing that the 2 connections are now bridged, you will now be able to use the computers internet access to enter xbox live. You may find that you will have a strict NAT set up on your router, to avoid this you will need to forward some ports, if you get this far post back i will try to run you through this process.
hope this helps and good luck.

Configure XBOX with Media Center

Windows Media Center setup on your Xbox 360 Begin by connecting your Xbox 360 to your home network. The Introduction to Home Networking guide on the Xbox website will provide information if you're setting up a network for the first time or if you need some guidance for adding the Xbox 360 to your existing home network.

Once your Xbox 360 is connected to your network, begin the Windows Media Center setup process by pressing the green button on your remote control (if you have one), or use your game controller to select the Media Center option from the Media tab in the Xbox 360 on-screen menu.

You are asked if you want to connect your Xbox 360 to a PC running Windows Media Center in Windows Vista. Select the Media Center option to continue.

Once your Windows Vista-based PC has been detected, your Xbox 360 will display an eight-digit code. Write down this code on a piece of paper, and then go to your Windows Vista-based PC.
Note: When connecting to a Windows Vista-based PC, you do not need to select Continue or download additional software.
Add your Xbox 360 as an Extender to your Windows Vista-based PC Important: During the setup process, the Windows Firewall is automatically configured to enable your Windows Media Center Extender to connect to your Windows Vista-based PC. If you're using extra security software that includes a non-Microsoft firewall, you may need to manually configure your firewall to ensure a successful setup and connection.

With your eight-digit code in hand, begin by selecting Windows Media Center from the Start menu in Windows Vista. From the Windows Media Center menu, select Tasks, and then select Add Extender. This will begin a simple, step-by-step path that will add your Xbox 360 to your Windows Vista-based PC. During this setup process, you will be asked to provide the eight-digit setup key you received from your Xbox 360.
Click through this preview of the setup to familiarize yourself with the process.

The Extender Setup screen provides an introduction of the steps you'll go through to add an Extender to your Windows Vista-based PC. Click Next to start the process.

Enter the eight-digit setup key you received from your Xbox 360 (the one that you wrote down on your piece of paper, right?), and then click Next.

The setup process will need to make changes to your Windows Vista-based PC settings to establish the connection to the Xbox 360. Click Next to continue.

Review the information provided about Away Mode. Make your selection, and then click Next.

The setup process will ask if you would like to share media with the Extender. Select Yes (recommended) to share media folders, and then click Next. If you are using User Account Control, you'll see a User Account Control dialog box that will seek your permission to run the Windows Media Center Extender Configuration. Select Continue to grant permission.

Your PC will now go through the remaining steps to configure itself and establish the connection to your Xbox 360.

That's it! You're done! When you're finished with the PC setup, go back to your Xbox 360, and start enjoying access to all of the digital entertainment stored on your Windows Vista–based PC through your Xbox 360.
Optimize your home network The quality of your entertainment experience, especially video playback, is dependent on having a reliable and high-performance home network. To help ensure the best performance, we recommend that you run the Windows Media Center Extender Network Performance Tuner during the setup process on your PC. The Network Tuner provides very specific feedback on your network, as well as tips to solve any potential problems.
You can click through the preview of the Network Performance Tuner to familiarize yourself with the process.

The Network Performance Tuner runs diagnostics on your home network and provides feedback on potential issues that would make your Windows Media Center experience less than optimal.

When analyzing the network, the Network Tuner provides specific feedback based on all of the components connected to your network.

The Network Tuner provides feedback on the types of media that your network may have trouble handling effectively and suggests corrective actions than can help to solve the problem

The Network Tuner also looks for performance issues related to how your network is set up. In this case, the fact that the Windows Vista-based PC and the Xbox 360 are both connected wirelessly to the router may cause performance issues. You'll only see these warnings screens when the Network Tuner has detected a problem.

Real-time feedback is offered through the Network Tuner, so you can see if the adjustments you make to your network improve the performance.

Shrey

Can i connect my xbox to my laptop /w pc usb

Xbox Network Connection using Hub

This is the most common network configuration and is also the easiest to setup.
Step #1: Plug your network cable(RJ-45 cable) that comes from your cable/DSL modem into the uplink port of your hub. (Make sure that your uplink is switched to "on").
Step #2: Take an RJ-45 cable and run it from one of the ports of the hub, directly to the Network Interface Card (NIC) installed in your computer.
Step #3: Take another RJ-45 cable and run it from a different port of your hub directly to your xbox.
**NOTE** A switch may be used in place of a hub with the same basic setup.**

That's it! No other network changes should be needed for this configuration. Your Xbox is now on the same network as your PC.

Xbox Network Connection using Router

This is another common network configuration.
Step #1: Plug your network cable(RJ-45 cable) that comes from your modem into the WAN port of your router.
Step #2: Take an RJ-45 cable and run it from one of the ports of the router, directly to the Network Interface Card (NIC) installed in your computer.
Step #3: Take another RJ-45 cable and run it from a different port of your router directly to your xbox.

**NOTE** In steps #2 and #3, you should not use a port that is directly beside the "uplink" port on your router, if your uplink port is being used to connect to another routing device.** If your router has a built in firewall, you will need to forward ports 8602 both incoming and outgoing to the internal ip address of your pc. Consult your device manaul for port forwarding.

That's it! Your Xbox is now on the same network as your PC

Xbox Network Connection using Crossover Cable

This is the last network configuration. For this setup you need at least one NIC card.
Step #1: Plug your USB cable that comes from your modem into your PC's USB port. This should already be done, if you have a usb modem for your current internet connection.
Step #2: Take an RJ-45 cable and run it from an installed NIC card on your PC, directly to the Xbox.

**NOTE** A crossover cable is only needed if you are connecting the Xbox directly to the second NIC card. If you have a device such as a switch, hub or router in between you should use a standard RJ-45 cable. This type of network setup also requires "Winroute©", a program downloadable from the world wide web. Consult the manual for specific instructions on how to set this up. Also if you have a USB ethernet adapter, you may use any of the setups described herein. USB ethernet adapter basically converts a USB cable into an RJ-45 cable.

That's it! Your Xbox is now on the same network as your PC.
