Don't really understand.. All PC's have to have the Off button held down for a few seconds to turn them off.. If you still have the operating systems running.. If you are running Windows, shut it down correctly via the start button first.. That is left mouse click the start button, then select turn off computer. That way the o/s (operating system) will shut the pc down. There maybe an option in the pc's bios or o/s config. to have the computer go all the way down. Anyway, most pc's behave that way, it's not abnormal.

There is an option at the BIOS setings of your pc that would allow you to turn off the computer at once or after holding the power button for about 4 seconds. Although this is only effective if you havent loaded any OS like winXP in your computer

How to reboot computer

Sarcastically: Turn it off, then turn it on again

Seriously: If the computer does not have a button specifically for reseting power then hold the power button in for about 5-10 seconds. That is the average amount of time for the newer computers to turn off while holding the button in.

If for some reason the pc does not shut down after holding the power button in for about 5-10 seconds then simply unplug the power cord, wait 30 seconds and then plug the power cord back in.
NOTE: This is not the recommended method for rebooting a computer and can cause damage to your PC. The damage that can be caused includes, but is not limited to: Loss of data on any re-writable media in use, permanent damage to motherboard/power supply/etc.

My dell dimension computer won't turn on. When I push in the button, it only flashes orange and then won't turn on.

Plug the computer into a power strip that has an on/off switch. Turn the power strip on. Press the computer power on button to start as normal, but after after one second turn off the power strip switch just long enough for the fans on the computer to slow down, but the amber computer led doesn't turn off and then turn the power strip switch back on. Computer should start and run fine. Computer typically can be shut down for up to 5 minutes and restarted normally--any longer and you have to sue the power strip power switch routine again

Well I was on my computer trying to finish my paper due for school and I saved my paper to my computer first then I wanted to plug in my usb so that I could save it to my usb and take it to school the next...

Sounds like there may have been a virus on the USB drive..
OR when you inserted the USB drive it shorted the usb port.
Can you boot into safe mode (F8)?
Can you get a windows disk to boot?
Please get back intouch if you can boot up either way.
If you cant, you may need to be looking for a repair shop

Keyboard doesn't work properly

Turn on your computer, go to the control panel, if you are using Windows XP, click on switch to classic control panel" and then go to Accessibility Options. There is a keyboard tab that the settings can be changed to help people with disabilities operate their keyboards better but if you hold down certian keys for more than a few seconds, Windows XP will activate these settings. Sounds like your son accidently turned on "FilterKeys" There is a check box on the Keyboard tab of Accessibility Options that turns off FilterKeys. If "Use FilterKeys" is checked, uncheck that box and then click "OK" and see if that helps.

Good Luck!

My gateway 420GR desktop will power on but on the monitor only display no input signal. The PC will also not turn off at the power switch.

Sounds like the power button on your monitor is not on, is the light on the monitor yellow and dim or bright when you start the computer? Make sure the monitor is on. If you hold the power switch in for about 10 seconds the power will turn off. But that is not the recommended way to shut your computer down. Use your start button and log off or close that way. Good Luck.

Turns on but no boot

I had this happen sometimes after a windows update/reboot.
If the computer is on, hold down the power button until it cuts off.
Unplug the power cord. Wait for a couple of minutes.
Plug the cord back in, and turn on system.

Inspiron 530S won't turn off

The one method that will always work to shut down a frozen computer is to hold down the power button on the front of the computer until it turns off. When you turn it back on, it will give you an option of different startup modes, and unless it really is a serious problem, you can just go with "start Windows normally".
