Western Digital PaSSPORT 120GB PORTABLE , write errors and takes very long to copy file

Western Digital Passport Odel WD1200U017 120GB PORTABLE.
write errors and takes very long to copy files even with over 40gb space left on it.

I have run scandisk (chkdsk) with options for thorough scan and fix errors and this still did not work. I also reformated the drive and tried the scandisk and this still did not resolve the problem. The problem seems to be really bad and apparant when copying large files anything from 500Mb to 1 Gb.
I bought drive in mar 2006 so it is just over 2 years now but problems first occured around August/Sept 2007.

Click start control panel administrate tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes

Automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in one box then select check now start then after its finished return and tick the other box you should not

do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage this drive
i have found the best results ticking in one box the returning after it has finished then ticking the other box

it might take some time depending on the size of your disk but be patient

Incorrect GB space free amount and space used. Doesnt change as I delete more files.

You may have hidden files on the drive. Unhide them by hitting the Alt key and going to tools

Select Folder Options

Go to "View" and select the two indicated options below and hit OK.

This will unhide what ever files you have. If you dont find the files taking up your space, just copy what ever files you need to your hard drive temporarily or another USB drive and format the disk.

I have a 4.4gb Outlook PST file I would like to save on to my WD Passport 500GB drive. I have 250gb free. I get error "not enough space on destination drive, free up space and try again"... copy of file...

Are you putting the files in folders on the hard drive and not directly on the drive? Anytime you save files you have to put them in a folder or the drive will say it's full. Make sure that all your files on the hard drive are in folders.

I got a 500 western digitial passport. I have NO idea what it is for or how to use it? It has a usp port on it to plug into comuter, but where do I go then with it and what does it do?

When you connect the Waetern Digital USB hard drive into the USB port of your computer, the computer will detect it as an external hard drive. You treat it just like any hard drive on your computer. You can create folders and copy files to and from this external hard drive.
The main use for these drives is to back up your data that is stored on your computer's hard drive/s so if the computer's hard drive fails you still have a backup of your data files etc.
You can also use the drive to copy files to the external hard drive and take it with you to another computer (a friend's) to download files or copy files to their computer.
The files can be anything, movie, music, photos, etc.

Why not make it KISS (Keep it simple and stupid). Go to your my Passport folders or files that you want to copy, Click on it and Copy (ctrl c) or Cut it (ctrl x), now go to your internal drive (C:\ or D:\,etc) and do Paste (ctrl V. You can also copy or cut multiple files or folders.

After posting the above, I found the answer on another forum about 10 minutes later. The WD drive is formated in FAT 32. My XP PC HDDs are formated in NTFS. FAT 32 has a 4Gb file size limit.

Answer. Format the WD drive in NTFS. It takes about 10 sec to do a quick format, but of course you lose all the content. Then You can copy anything you like to it. I have just copied a 33Gb video to the disc.
