Jam tapes, not playing smoothly

posted by trjohnson115 on Apr 30, 2008

Every time I try to play my old hi8 tapes where I recorded they start to play and then the tape gets jammed up.  It like the reel or something needs cleaning or oiled up?  Even when I try to record new videos now with new hi8 tapes it starts the same problem.  When its about to jam I can see lines in screen and starts getting fuzzy.  After it gets jammed sometimes when I turn it back on it will start back and play for a minute and do it again and sometimes it won't start at all it will be so tangled up that I can even get the tapes out.  I press the button to get the tapes out and it beaps twice and won't release the tapes.  I have to turn it off then take out the battery and start over and after couple of times I can get it out.  Is there anything I can do; will a hi8 cleaning tape help this.  Someone told me I could put oil or rubbing alcohol on the reel but I don't know I need some help.  If there is any suggestions or anyone with the same problem please let me know. thanks
