High Orlando,
I would really like to have a complete model number to give you the best help possible. But one thing that comes to mind is your thermostat should be cutting the compressor off when it reaches its temperature, then again your defrost timer should be defrosting every 8 hours or so. If you do have a 106 source refrigerator you should still have a defrost timer. It will be inside the freshfood section under the control panel. Good luck. mca0824@aol.com

We have a Kenmore 16, model model 253.8283680, that recently continuously cycles on and off. What could be the problem associated with this?

Hello;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

The normal cycle is: Your compressor will turn on to raise the freezer temperature 20 degrees F. above the set temperature, and then the compressor will shut off, Until the freezer temperature drops 20 degrees F. below the set temperature and again the compressor will turn on.

One of the main problems with this type of freezer is the door gasket becomes crushed over time or the door is so thin it becomes deformed.

Do not try to replace the door gasket. You have to soak the new gasket in hot water for 1/2 hour and then form it on the door.

If you notice a gap in the corner of the door - pull hard on it to get it flush.

Recondition the door gasket - With a hair dryer and a kitchen spatula, heat the gasket and try to expand the gasket by pulling out with the spatula.

You can purchase a special freezer lubricant. Be sure not to over do it. It can make the door hard to open. P/N 542638

How to fix a Kenmore chest freezer model #255.19502010

Kenmore model 255.19502010 seems to have this problem where it will not get cold anymore, but it is a $12 solution and and easy wiring job. Easy like if you know colors and how to plug things in you should be able to do it. Get a Supco 3 n'1 Start (model RCO410) for a 1/4-1/3 hp compressor on ebay or Amazon. This one device replaces 3 different components (relay, overload and start capacitor) that all have a tendency to fail. When it arrives, make sure the frezer is unplugged, remove the metal panel on the side of the freezer. You will see a large black orb almost the size of a football, that is the compressor. On the left side there is a black plastic box that covers the connections on the side of the compressor. Open that up and you will find another black plastic thing plugged into the compressor that has a bunck of wires plugged into it. Pull it loose of the compressor by pulling straight back or gently prying it away with a flat screwdriver. You will see that it is plugged into 3 metal prongs that stick out of the compressor. You will see that all the wires go back to a Cylinder shaped device about 1.5 inch diameter and about 5 inches high it is secured to the bottom rail with a single bolt. Remove the black cylinder and all other pieces that were plugged into the compressor. You should be left with a white and black wire coming from the dial selector on the front. Follow the directions on the package of the SupcoBy connecting the white wire to the lower left prong on the compressor, the Black wire to the top center prong and the red wire to the bottom right prong. Connect the other 2 black wires to the black and white wire coming from the dial with the enclosed wire nuts. Put the new 3 in 1 next to the compressor andplug in your freezer to test. If it gets cold then unplug it and secure the new 3 n1 with a ziptie, duct tape' screw' or some other way (do NOT screw into the 3 n 1 just through the hole in the top.)

If this does not fix your freezer then put it on craigslist for a fermentation chamber for home-brewers and home wine makers because your compressor is probably shot.

One note: while I was repairing mine I took the dial thermostat out and int eh process unplugged one of the connection. The first time I plugged in my freezer it did not turn on but the green light was on. If this happens to you inspect all the connections and make sure they are on tight.

Looking for the start up surge for my kenmore freezer 253. I would like to purchase a generator and want to make sure this freezer would operate.

Hello,

At the peak power usage time..compressor start up it may reack 11 amps..when calulating that it is a max of 1300 watts..so a generator of 1500 or more should work fine
When running after start up is usually about 500 watts

Is it ok to lay te freezer on its side to get it from the store to my home?....

Sure. This is quite ok. You will need to do this once more when the coils are scheduled for cleaning in the future(if your unit has floor mounted coils). This is perfectly ok. Just remember to protect the side when transferring it across a long stretches of road. The constant shacking and motions of driving can damage the finish on some units.

Can we lay a freezer on its side temporarily?

You can do it but be sure to let it stand upright for 24 hours before plugging it in and using it. The oil in the compressor will run out into the lines and block it. It needs time to drain back to the compressor.

We lost power due to storm since restored and now the compressor starts but stops within 30 seconds and does this over and over

It sound like your compressor is in trouble, I would try and see what amp. the compressor is running in this 30 seconds. If it is over the name plate requirement I would try to change a 3 in 1 electrical component to see wheather it helps. Check your amp. at all time.Hope this help.God Bless

Compressor stops running unplug for awhile then plug back in compressor starts for a day or two

There could be many reasons for running hot, and the "Thermal Overload" is protecting the compressor.
Make sure nothing else is on the circuit used by the freezer.
Lastly, you may have a weak overload.

Kenmore chest freezer not working

Remove the panel covering the compressor. Remove the relay plugged on the side of the compressor and shake it. If it rattles or has any burned spots it is shorted out. Try replacing it first. Make sure you replace it with the correct replacement, not a fit-all. If this is not the problem you will need to replace the compressor. If it is less than 5 yrs old the compressor should still be in warranty. If so call Sears, it will be repaired free of charge. If it is out of warranty buy a new freezer.

Kenmore freezer not cold at all!

We had a Kenmore upright which worked fine but then suddenly was not keeping food frozen. Long story short, do not store anything on top of the freezer unit. It will insulate the coils that run across the top of the unit, and cause your compressor to work harder than it needs to, and eventually overheat and become ineffective. Says nothing about it in the user manual. We learned the hard way by losing food.
