Ok...are you in possession of the installation disk? the instructions are a bit more explicit on the order in which this is done..I'd suggest you follow those instructions, and you may have a finer result.

Try reinstalling your USB port drivers
you may want to cut and paste this, then print it as it may involve a forced shutdown of your PC and you wont see the text.

from here--------------------------------------------------------------------

firstly unplug your external USB hard drive

assuming you are using windows
right click my computer
left click properties
click on hardware tab
click device manager button click the little + next to Universal serial bus
right click all the child devices below this such as generic USB hub intel (r) blah blah ICH7 blah blah USB root hub
and systematically click uninstall
if you are using a USB mouse there is a chance at some point doing this, it will stop working temporarily.
restart the computer with a shutdown if possible, if not press and hold your power button till it shuts off.
it should automatically find your USB ports and reinstall the drivers.
then when its finished (can take 5 minutes wait until your confident its not got more (found new hardware) popups.
insert your USB hard drive, this time I'm sure it will find it.
if not and you simply must get the data, open the USB hard disk. you will find a standard SATA hard disk inside, connect it to a spare SATA port and power cable inside your PC
Hope this helps

My Computer did not access Western Digital Hard Disk, Model No. WD 1600 AABB Caviar SATA.

Good morning! Please make sure that the drive’s power and SATA cables are properly connected. If the Serial ATA host adapter card is installed in a 64-bit PCI slot on the system motherboard, move the card to a 32-bit slot.

Verify that only one power cable (either SATA or legacy) is connected to the drive. Check to see that the power connector and SATA interface cable are securely attached and that the
SATA host adapter card is properly seated in the PCI slot.

The Serial ATA interface connects each drive in a point-to-point configuration with the built-in SATA port on the motherboard or with the SATA host adapter card; therefore eliminating the master/slave relationship as required with EIDE. Each drive utilizes its own
cable for data transfer rates. Jumper settings for Western Digital Serial ATA hard drives are mainly used for enterprise storage environments.

Most third party controller cards and RAID adapters are recognized as a SCSI device under Device Manager. This is normal and will not affect your drive or system performance.

To verify if the Serial ATA drive is recognized by the system, Right-click on the My Computer icon, select Properties, left-click on the Hardware tab, and click on Device Manager in the window. Double-click on Disk Drives. Your new Western Digital Serial ATA drive should be listed as a "SCSI Disk Device" or "Serial ATA Disk Device." If not, make sure that all cables are securely attached and that your system BIOS has been properly configured. regards

How can I tell which of the 4 USB ports is the 2 0 (Dell Dimension 2350) ? I am unable to install a Western Digital My Book external hard drive, and their tech said I need to update the USB drivers....

click start, control panel, system, hardware, then the device manager tab .
Open the universal serial bus controllers and right click on any of the "usb" root hubs.
You may see the update drivers there, if not click on properties and you will see it there, click on update drivers and it will do the rest, with a few clicks here and there from you.

I brought a Maxtor basics external desktop hard drive, 500gb for my laptop. my laptop is windows vista and i can't get the portable hard drive to work or install onto my laptop. what can i do?

A few basics.. are you sure you've hooked it up right? meaning usb cable plugged into both the laptop and the hard drive? Does that particular model hardrive require a power pack to operate? If so, is that plugged in and operational? Assuming that is all OK.. does your system recognise that new hardware has been added when you turn it ( the hard drive on) and it is plugged in? It should but if not.. you may have to use the control panel and choose the ADD NEW HARDWARE feature.. At some point during all this. your system shoud acknowledge that new hardware has been recognized and it should ask for a cd with drivers on it to be installed or it may already have drivers that are compatible with it and self load.. If you fail to get any kind of new hardware acknowledgement, you may have a bad USB cable, a bad USB port or your new hard drive is not operating correctly.. I'll check back periodiaclly to see if any of these suggestions got you going or if you need any more help.. Good luck

Hard drive

You connected the usb had drive , and if it had an external power source it was on ???

ok right click on mycomputer
choose hardware
choose device manager
right click anything on the tree view and click scan for hardware changes.. Windows Xp should automatically detect and install it..

If you got vista, Right click computer and choose device manager,, right click anything on the tree view and click scan for hardware changes,, windows vista should install it automatically

IF THAT FAILS
verify your usb cable is good
check if your device requires an external power source and verify that it is connected..

connect it to another computer to see if it working

IF ALL THE ABOVE FAILS THE UNIT IS NO GOOD..,, you could try changing the harddrive inside it but i would have been wanting my money back or insurance since it could have been damaged while shipping..

I THINK I MAY HAVE COVERED IT ALL BUT IF I MISSED ANYTHING PLEASE POST IT AND I WILL TRY TO ASSIST
