SOURCE: Microwave troubleshooting...

If it blows the fuse as soon as you hit the START button, it's almost certainly a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it blows a few seconds after you hit the START button, it's probably the high-voltage transformer. You'll possibly also smell a faint electrical burning smell from the rear vent after you shut if off.

If it blows the fuse as soon as it's plugged in, you probably have a shorted door switch, a shorted varistor, or an internally exposed wire shorting to the chassis, etc.

SOURCE: Microwave stopped heating

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.
If it goes dead or blows the breaker when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

But you might replace the fuse and do another quick heating test to see if it blows again. If so, you'll need to do some checks.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

If there's no obvious removable cover over the bulb (most often on the rear or side) and the owner's manual doesn't address it, then disassembly will be required.

Always unplug a microwave before removing or installing any bulbs.

If it's an over the range type, remove the vent grille across the top and see if bulbs can be accessed there. There may be a panel on the bottom covering the light(s), instead.

If not, chances are you'll have to remove it from the wall, then remove the outer cover. If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

Once it's out of the wall, the outer cover (wrapper) will need to be removed, just as you'll need to do on a counter top model.

On a counter top model, be sure it's unplugged, but otherwise ignore the instructions above this paragraph.

The screws you need to remove should be pretty obvious, but a special driver (such as a T20H type or GTXH20-100) may be needed.

Be sure to put all the screws back in the right holes, since some may be special grounding screws.

Bulbs can be had in most grocery stores, hardware stores, home improvement centers, and big box or department stores.

Many models use halogen lamps. You must not touch the new one with your bare skin, as the oils will shorten the bulb life.

My smeg microwave will not heat the food ...... possible causes

If everything else is working but it won't heat the food, the causes are the magnetron "common failure" or the high voltage capacitor and diode can be a factor, the three work together to heat the food. Depending on the nature of repair it can be close to the cost of a new microwave oven.

Evry thing works except the food is not heated. It makes the noise, timer counts down..

HI. in most cases, this will lead to a failed Heating device(magnetron tube). It would be wise to check the Magnetron cutoff fuse to be sure of its integrity. if the fuse is blown, simply replace it. if the fuse continues to show continuity, replace the magnetron.

(((The fuse is located inside the unit along side of the blower housing, or magnetron tube assembly)))

Hi,

To know all about magnetron....How much would be the cost and how you would make sure ...Follow the below steps :-

http://www.partselect.com/repair.aspx?appliance=microwave&part=test-magnetron

It really Dangerous to Replace Magnetron yourself. Still, if you wish i can provide you with a generic procedure :-

Smeg microwave SA 31MX not heating is it repairable and at what cost and where at we live in werribee victoria

it is repairable, the problem is the magnetron needs to be replced ( an element that emits the micro waves ) but will need to be checked to make sure its not the capacitor that starts it or the circut that controls it.
repair shops vary so ask them about how much they would charge to replace the magnetron then you will be able to tell who will end up charging you the most and who would be cheeper(aprox $50-$75 plus parts
