Check your manual (hard copy or on-disk) to see if it is necessary to turn them on in your CMOS setup or if it can be done from the Control Panel Hardware manager.

first you must check in your bios settings have disabled your usb ports .if it is disabled in your bios ?? you must enabled it. if still have the same issue ?? check "device manager" option from control panel and enabled your usb ports.
open control panel -> administrator tool -> computer management -> device manager.

The usb ports will not work.

Chk whether the USB ports are disabled in the device manager by Right clicking on My Computer and then Manage and then Device Manager
If not disabled in device manager then chk through BIOS. (USB - Enabled or Disabled)
If not disabled then chk for any viruses in ur computer.
Tell me if not solved..

USB ports do not work

1.) Check your CMOS/Bios settings to see if any USB ports are disabled.

2.) If not, check to see that USB ports show in your operating system's device manager or settings. Enable them if they are disabled. Otherwise, you may need to reinstall the drivers that came with your model of notebook computer.

If using Windows XP, for example, go to Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, Universal Serial Bus Controllers. If the latter is not present and you have USB enabled in CMOS/Bios, you will need to install the drivers. If "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" is present, look within to see if they are all enabled and working properly.
If not, re-install the drivers.

3.) If the above does not work, you may have bad USB ports that will require service by an authorized repair service for your notebook computer.

    USB Port not working

If you are running Windows XP or Vista, here is a "magic fix" that seems to work. (I have NO idea why it works, but it has on many occasions restored the USB ports on three different computers.
Turn off the laptop. Remove the power cord AND the battery. Press the start button and hold for 5 seconds. Replace the battery back into the laptop, and reconnect the power cord if desired, and turn it back on. See if the USB ports work now. Post or comment back with the results.

Compaq Presario v2000 w/ dead USB ports

I have the same problem with my Compaq Presario V2000. Lost both USB ports and HP tells me that the motherboard has to be replaced at $300 +..I searched and found a PCMCIA card with two USB ports for $10. No problems with the USB ports on this card..great and cheap solution.
My belief is that the compaq usb ports do not have power limiting circuitry therefore allowing you to overload the output power on the ports. My ports failed after I downloaded into a burglar alarm system I was programming.
