Question about Toshiba Satellite A105 Notebook

1 Answer

Toshiba Satellite A105-S2201

I've had my laptop for about 17 months. It worked fine until I slammed down on the keyboard. Actually, then it worked perfectly for several minutes, then it froze up. I did a hard shutdown and when I restarted it...

The first screen says Toshiba and while that's loading I get a choice at the bottom that says F2 for System Utilities or F12 for Boot Menu. If I don't press anything, the next screen has Intel Corporation info then: For Realtek RTL8139(X)/8130/810X PCI Fast Ethernet controller v2.17 (051202) PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable (no cable unless it's inside the laptop.) PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM. Operating System not found If I press F12 for the Boot Menu, I get 5 choices. HDD, FDD, CD/DVD, LAN or USB Memory. No matter which one I choose, I then get that earlier screen or a screen that says TOSHIBA Recovery Wizard. Warning This HDD is not initialized. Initialize HDD and restart. And if I continue anyway, I get Error: F3E1000001 and have no choice but to shut down. After googleing HDD I figure that means Hard Disk Drive? Whatever. That still doesn't say how to initialize it. I also have the CD that came with the computer. When I use that it says to hold down C until the Toshiba logo appears, then I get "Loading RAMDISK Image, please wait". Then I get the Recovery Wizard window. Same as before. At one point I got a message that said I have no Hard Drive but I can't get that screen to come up today. I've taken two panels off of the back and I believe one was for the Hard Drive. That did not want to just wiggle loose so it appears that I didn't jar it loose when hitting the keyboard. The other panel covered the motherboard (?) and other boards. Those look fine but when I first hit the keyboard, that particular panel was a little warped looking. It popped right back into place. I also unscrewed every screw on the back and the laptop did not just want to pop apart. So I didn't force anything. I know, I have an expensive temper. But only on rare occasions. Thanks in advance for any and all help!

It sounds like when you slammed on the hard drive you cause the mechanical arm inside the drive to malfunction. you will need to replace the hard drive and then reload winbdows and the drivers for your laptop

You can try using compressed air can to clean the keyboard, maybe that will fix it. But if it's caused by wear and tear or you have spilled some liquid on the keyboard, you need to buy a replacement.
A keyboard for your laptop is around 17$ with free shipping:

The volume is too low so i went in and changed the settings to trusurround and now have no sound at all.

It could be a corrupted Drivers or wrong drivers installed. What is the model like A105 - S2201 etc ?

You can re-download the drivers for your laptop and install and it should work fine.

How do I replace the keyboard?

next to the F1 key and the windows key (2nd upper key and second to last key) are two screws, usually under some covering. unscrew and lift top edge of the keyboard towards the trackpad to lay face down. Undo the wire ribbon by lifting the grey or brown tabs and remove ribbon and keyboard. Then install the new keyboard by inserting the ribbon on the place. Lock down with the tabs and put the plastic prongs (close to the space bar) into the laptop body first, and then close keyboard onto the final position. screw back in and thats all. nboulikas@gmail.com for any additional questions.

The touchpad mouse on my toshiba salellite does not function even though it shows it working properly when you go into the touchpad icon. I have an external wireless mouse (usb) hooked up that works fine...

The touchpad is most probably defective. If you have dropped your laptop the touchpad cable could have get out from its connector on the mainboard. You can get a new touchpad/palmrest on ebay. You have to remove your touchpad/palmrest as shown in the link below, steps 17 to 19 :

http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-A105/remove-motherboard-1.htm

Identify the part number of your touchpad/palmrest. Search on ebay.com : Toshiba Satelitte A105 palmrest. Buy the one with the same part numer as yours.

...or have your laptop repaired by a professional.

I think your Toshiba got grounded or short circuit inside. Better also to use USB Keyboard, it works.

Toshiba Satellit M35X-S114 locked keyboard

Hi there. This is not forced to work but you can give it a try. Perform a forced shutdown on the laptop by holding down the on/off button until it shuts down, then take the battery out and the AC power for 10 minutes, put it all back together and try again. Please let me know how you get on. Good luck
