Question about Projection Televisions

3 Answers

I have a lg 42PX5D plasma and on watching the screen, the right hand side appears to have a shine when on peoples faces and a green/blue shine when watching the football ( grass). I wonder if this is from previously splitting the screen and maybe the settings are out, but i cannot rectify it.Do you know the best settings to have tv on. I watch mostly through sky hd, and althogh the hd channels are fine the rest are not up to standard.

This could be caused by many different factors. I would reset your picture settings to default. Then make sure there are no sources of magetism near the TV including VCRs. Check the wiring to make sure that there is no interference. Also, make sure you are sitting directly in front of the TV at about 3m to ensure the best picture quality.

pmtacofix, there are no LEDs in a plasma display, the backlight is produce by a few cold cathode flourescent lamp.

Go to the picture menu on the TV and select video preset to reset the display. If the picture looks and acts better than go back to the menu and in the PSM submenu I would pick "intelligent eye", this will automatically adjuct your picture for you. If the picture still looks good then I would pick "medium" in the colour temperature to get a good average colour balance. After that if all is still well I would pick "dynamic" in the APM menu.

If you've followed all my recomendation then there might if fact be something wrong with your display, the polarized glass that covers the screen could be the cause. HD channels use a higher vertical and horizontal resolution so the glass could not affect them but with you switch to SD channels with their lower resolution the defects in the glass can come through. If this is the case and you still have warranty or service contract then have the TV repaired.

Find out if you still have warranty for sure. Don't wait usually is only 1 year. You may also have an extended warranty, especially if you purchased the TV with a credit card.

The problem is the led which display that area is bad, the are sections in the display. What you could do is have a repair person to replace that sector.

Over time a thin layer of fungi grows over the top of your BLUE CRT preventing light fronm shining through. This causes you to loose the blue color in your set. Check and clean. Also when the back is off your set check to see if your blue CRT is on. If not you may need to replace it.

You can purchase the lamp yourself and replace it yourself. The lamp is built to fail after about 3-5 years depending on how often you watch it. There are step by step directions in your user's manual. If you have lost or misplaced it, you can download it for free in PDF format on the LG website. The lamp usually are around $200.

LG rear projection colours out of alignment

I have a similar problem with an LG (except my red is the one that is fine) and was able to talk to a tech in some detail about it. The tech prefaced by saying that he had done a hundred or so of these with exactly the same issue. This is very common and the life span of rear projection televisions is not great. Having said that, plasmas and LCDs are also limited in life span mostly due to modern high performance gaming machines which shorten the lifespan of monitors both plasma and LCD alike.

From what I have gathered, this is not a problem that you can easliy sort out. (Of course they would say that though) It involves replacing the digital board which means soldering followed by aligning the lamps which requires quote a lot of expertise.

The part itself apparently costs around $200 Australian and the labour will vary for the cost of the technician but I was quoted that the labour was about the same cost as the part.

Not sure if I would call this solved but I hope it has been at least a little helpful.

Blue CRT issues?

Yes the puddle is related to the Blue CRT coolant leaking. You are most likely going to need a new Blue CRT drive circuit board and quite possibly a new Blue CRT if the CRT got too hot from not haveing a sufficent supply of coolant. You can get replacement CRT drives and CRts at the following link.
