Question about Computers & Internet

I have a HP media Centre m487.uk desktop PC and when connecting a new samsung monitor with the DVI cable, get a blank screen. The analog signal works fine though. There must be a setting that needs to be changed perhaps? I just can't find anything that will work. I am using Windows XP

Most monitors with both analog and dvi have a switch to change. So on the monitor, look to see if you have a setting for which connector to use. it should be in one of the menus on the monitor osd

How to install a female DVI to my computer

If you are trying to connect a monitor that has only DVI connections to an older PC that only has VGA-15 pin, the easiest solution is to buy a replacement video board that has DVI capability. However, ensure that the DVI is of the same TYPE as the monitor. There are a number of different DVI configurations, and they are not all compatible with each other. There are VGA-to-DVI adapter cables, but they only work if the DVI is DVI-A or DVI-I, since the VGA port is analog and not digital.

Here is a link to the different DVI configurations. You can compare them to the connector on your device to see what type you need. If it is a digital-only type, you will need either a new video card that supports digital or you need to get a analog-to-digital converter cable. They are more than just an adapter; they have electronics that convert the signal.

Problem with the monitor

hi,

first of all,try to connect the cable to other device(laptop) to see if is working, because if you receive the message"No signal" then the monitor is working but the cable/signal did not cross to the monitor, then is working with other device then try again or check if you can connect the monitor with different port if you monitor has one vga/dvi or hdmi.

How can i connect DirectTV to the hp 1740 monitor ?

Your HP 1740 Monitor uses:
  • One 15-pin mini D-sub analog VGA
  • One DVI-D (VGA analog or digital)
as for your DirectTV box you have at least an RCA and a HDMI to connect to Display devices that "DOES'NT MATCH" with your preferred monitor.

Your only chance to make it happen is to get a HDMI to DVI adapter (like this one: http://images.thomann.de/pics/prod/249861.jpg ) to output your digital box to your monitor.

Can i get an adapter for my emachine monitor to go into a dell desktop ...my lead i have now doesnt fit as unable to screw it in

YES.

I believe it is time now for the guessing game............

1) Is the monitor about so high, and so wide?

2) Does the monitor look like a small TV, or is it flat in appearance?

3) What does the monitor cable look like?

4) Is your hair Brown, and do you smoke cigarettes?

NO.............just wanted to see if you were following along! Geez!

An Analog monitor, such as a CRT type of monitor, uses a VGA cable,

http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-a-crt-monitor.htm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_Connector

Scroll down a little for a VGA Cable example.

Flat LCD screen monitors are Digital.
Some may have a VGA Cable attached, but the best cable option is a DVI cable,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface

(Click on any photo on those two Wikipedia pages, to enlarge)

Using these two examples, does one apply to the eMachines, and one apply to the monitor?

Let us say the monitor has a DVI cable.
The eMachines Desktop PC has a VGA port. (Connector)
For this you would simply use a DVI to VGA adapter,

http://www.directron.com/dviadapter.html

Now notice...........this is a VGA MALE to DVI FEMALE.

The DVI cable on the flat LCD screen monitor, has a male connector.
The contact pins of it go into socket holes, in the DVI end, of the DVI to VGA adapter.

The VGA port on the eMachines, has socket holes.
The male VGA connector end on the DVI to VGA adapter, has contact pins.

Point?

Make sure you get the correct DVI to VGA adapter.
There is a male DVI to female VGA adapter, also.

This is just one example.
For instance I'm using an HP 2009M 20-inch widescreen monitor, AND an RCA 26-inch HDTV, as dual monitors.

Presently using the HP 2009M with a DVI cable, and the RCA L26HD31 HDTV with a VGA cable.

(I'm also using an ATI Radeon HD5450 graphics card. Pretty 'pud', but it does OK for what I want)

Primer;
A computer sends out a digital signal. To get the best graphics quality, you ideally use a monitor with a digital cable. (DVI, etc)

When you use an Analog monitor on a computer, the computer has to change the digital signal down to an Analog one.
Therefore the graphics quality is not as great.

Digital cable technology now, is DVI, HDMI, Display Port, and Mini-Display Port. And some others I'm sure I've forgotten.

For additional questions please post in a Comment.

Also post what the monitor manufacturer name, and model number is. (Look on the back)

Are you using the VGA connector on the motherboard, (Back of computer), or do you have a graphics card installed?

If you have a graphics card installed, what is the manufacturer name, and model number?

How can i use dvi port

DVI stands for (D)igital (V)ideo (I)nterface.

DVI is a new form of video interface technology made to maximize the quality of flat panel LCD monitors and high-end video graphics cards. It is a replacement for the P&D Plug & Display standard.

you can connect high definition monitor , LCD projector , LCD T.V to a DVI port

There three kind of DVI connector
1. DVI-D (Digital)
2. DVI-A (Analog)
3. DVI-I (Integrated Digital/Analog)

DVI-D format is used for direct digital connections between source video (namely, video cards) and digital LCD (or rare CRD) monitors

DVI-A - High-Res Analog
DVI-A format is used to carry a DVI signal to an analog display, such as a CRD monitor or and HDTV

DVI-I - The Best of Both Worlds
DVI-I format is an integrated cable which is capable of transmitting either a digital-to-digital signal or an analog-to-analog signal, but it will not work transmitting a digital-to-analog or analog-to-digital signal.

How to Recognize These three types of DVI Cable
There are two variables in every DVI connector cable, and each represents one characteristic.

The flat pin on one side denotes whether the cable is digital or analog:
A flat pin with four surrounding pins is either DVI-I or DVI-A
A flat pin alone denotes DVI-D

The pinsets vary depending on whether or not the cable is single- or dual-link:
A solid 27-pin set (rows of 8) for a dual- link cable
Two separated 9-pin sets (rows of 6) for a single-link cable

DVI cable not working

If you still have your old monitor plug it back in for a bit and load the drivers for the new monitor (from the disk which came with the new monitor). Right click on your desktop and choose properties and set your display resolution to something like 1024 x 768. Shut down the pc and connect your new monitor to it with the dvi adapter. If it is recognised ok you can then set the resolution from 1024 x 768 to the recommended amount for your new screen. The refresh rate is also important as some lcd screens only work at a certain level. There should be an auto switch on the monitor and if you press this it sets the display to optimum, - or should do.
