Same problem here - tried diff cables....batteries.....I'm thinking USB driver or software / driver. I'm running win 98 until I can get another copy of XP. I wore my factory recovery disks out. I'd be happy to post here when I find a solution to this prob. Go Bears!

What operating system are you using? Is you camera connected via USB? Have you tried using another USB port? Did you make sure to install the software before plugging in your camera?

Generally if you are running Windows 98, you will need to reboot after installing the software to even have a chance of the camera being recognized correctly.

If you are running Windows 2000, XP or Vista, the camera should be recognized and a driver installed or searched for from the CD software you installed before plugging in the camera.

Sometimes if you plug in the camera first without installing the software, the PC finds a new device with no driver. You can see this by going to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager and you should see and exclamation on a device in the list. You need to remove this item and reboot your PC.

Now install the software first and when the install is done, then plug in your camera. Generally this works out pretty well.

Check in device manager on computer as one normally would for correct driver installation.

Buy a card reader, you wont need camera connectivity then.

"%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Video Web Camera\webcam.exe"

Open the windows explorer, and click on to Computer.

Find "Program files x86" - click it twice

Now scroll down to "Video web camera" - click it twice

Look in the window on the right, and find "webcam"

using your middle finget, I mean right click it and in the window that opens goto
"Send To" and pick desktop(create shortcut).

As long as the above mentioned files exist, you should have your webcam shortcut back on your desktop.

Using the player as a Web Camera
To use your player as a Webcam:
1. Connect the player to your computer with the USB cable.
USB
2. When the USB connection screen appears on the player, press the MENU/EXIT button twice to access the Desktop.
3. Tap the Camera mode on the player's Desktop, then tap Web Camera twice.

Just purchased a PowerShot A490, loaded software etc. but when I try to upload pics to my computer it says it can not detect camera. My older model, PowerShot A570 can be detected with the new software...

Consider NOT using the USB connection.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.

My computer is not detecting the connection of my camera

Hello, I suggest you purchase a "card reader" that can be used to transfer the images. This is a less expensive solution since the repair would cost over $100.00

Card readers can be purchased at Best Buy, Walmat etc.
