Me too, copy and works fine. When the printer starts up I can see that the scanner moves, the green light is there - all i can see is that maybe it is vista or that i didn't run the set up cd completely. But I put the instillation CD in again and went to http://www.canon.com.au/vista/ and downloaded their driver - now it works fine

I would download the drivers from canon at link below. They have the latest software. There software should get your scan up and running. Here is the link just choose the operating system that you have.
the reason for this is the windows xp or vista operating environment, installed basic legacy support for your device. allowing only normal level functions. higher level functions require the software's api calls to be installed threw their software. you can get them at
The scanning feature is much more sensitive to connection signal strength than the printing function. Make sure the USB connection is firmly in place on both the computer and the MP500. If this doesn't fix the problem I would try a different 6 foot length USB cable.
The scanner part of the MP500 uses a different program to the printer driver...
Recommend you go to the Canon website and download the Navigator software for your printer model.. Install and then run it... This program is what you scan from... or any other TWAIN compliant (compatible) program.
