Question about Sony KP-ER43M61 43" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Dual picture, dark picture

I have a Sony 42" rear projection TV. It was manufactured in 2000. We are getting a dual picture with a fuzzy line down the approximate center of the screen. The color is also not correct, mostly dark and shadowy. I am pretty sure it is hooked up alright, we recently moved and it has not worked since. It is hooked up with component video cables from a DVD player only, no cable input is connected at this time. Until we moved, the unit worked perfectly. It was handled very carefully and never dropped.

    Thank you for the info.

It looks like the convergence ICs are damage or somehow during the move the solder joints around the are became loose.

If you are handy with a soldering iron, this might be something you can do.

Please let me know if you need more assistance.

Check for some instructional videos on You Tube, just google "how to solder" "How to desolder"

The ICs that will need to be replace are STK392-020, there are 2 of them.

I would also suggest to check the 3.15 amps pico/micro fuses nearby the ICs.

Its a very old set and if happens on all inputs and cables have been ruled out something serious--the rear inputs bypass the tuner in the set and based on its age I would not suggest spending major money (if you can find someone willing to work on a set of this age) on this set.

Many parts for this are no longer available.

Sony Wega projection tv with cirlce emblazened in center of scree

The clown face you see is the cap that the repair man (clown) did not remove from the new optical block he/she installed. The optical Block will have to be either removed from the TV so that the cap can be removed OR a crafty individual could take the screws out from around the screen frame and mirror cover and pop it out using a broom handle with a wad of duck tape on the end. In any case, this is mistake that can easily happen (I have done it), but the picture should have been verified before it was returned to you. Make them fix it in your home. I hope this was helpful, best wishes.

Fuzzy picture and dark picture and color seperation when hot.

The colors seperating is a convergence problem, as far as being dim this may be related but the TV likely needs service adjustments.

convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually $200-$400 Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!

some component or soldering is degrading.
take out the circuit board and look for capacitors with shrinking plastic.then look for bad soldering.
if you do not know about electronics,do not mess with it there are 40000 parts in it.

Sony projection tv with dual tuners; only one tuner appears to be working now.

To verify that the tuner is the problem, move the cable from the second to the first. If you don't get a signal, the tuner is bad. The main tuner is part number 859843000 and is available for $47.38 from tritronicsinc.com
