posted by BigDaddy13 on Apr 29, 2008

My Brother HL-1440 lights are indicated "Main Motor Malfunction". Lights alternate between Drum light and all 4 lights blinking. Any reset possiblities or am I dead?

I, too, have the same problem with my Brother HL 1440; It said it needed toner, so I replaced the toner cartridge; After doing so, the top 2 lights blink (DRUM & READY) then all 4 blink, then back to the top 2. I've put in a new drum, new toner, reset the drum by opening front cover and pushing button until all lights lit up, turned it off over the weekend, hoping it just needed a rest -- nothing helps. Any ideas??

HL-1440 Have a blinking alarm light. The laser still worked so I ignored it. I stopped printing today. Have removed and replaced the toner. There is plenty of toner, but nothing prints. There is plenty of paper and there is no paper jam. The computer does not give an indication that the laser is not attached.

Please help.

With the main motor malfunction, I would say the machine is done for. Sorry. BUT, if you have all FOUR lights blinking alternating with the Drum light - it is a CPU run time error. Depending on how attached you are to the printer, a repair tech might be able to recover that problem. That would likely be a replaceable part and possible cheaper than buying a new printer, whereas the motor is likely more expensive than the whole printer.

It may be helpful to reset the drum counter. with the front cover open, push and hold the control panel button until all the lights come on. Then release and close the front cover of the printer. This is unlikely to resolve your problem, but it can't hurt to try it.

I have had a number of 1440's over the years, and never encountered any of the 'serious' errors such as the main motor malfunction. When the 1440's stopped working, I moved up to the 5240 and I've been extremely happy with that. The 5240 also gives you faster print speed, so that is a good deal.

Bill B2 - I need some more information for your problem, to be able to offer a solution. There is no condition I know of that only has the alarm light blinking by itself.
