My HP1040 Fax will not power on. I purchased a new power cord just to be safe, but there is still no power.

The fax is set to answer on the 4th ring. Change it to answer on say... 6 rings.It cannot differentiate the call before it's picked up ... it just answers at at set number of rings

you need an international phone service and dialing capability on your phone, the country code for Australia is 61 so you would dial:-

011-61- Y- xxxxxxxx where 011 is international code from USA, 61 is country code Y is area code and xxxxx is fax number.

Just dial the number as sending a local fax

If you are using the same phone line as your fax, you can start by connecting the answering machine on Line2 or 2-Ext at the back of the fax. Set the fax to answer on two rings higher than the Answering Machine. (for example: if answering maching is 4 rings, fax is 6 rings)

And then, turn on the auto answer.

it will not send or receive a fax if the error is still there. Clear the error by trying these steps:
-open cartridge door and remove the cartridge
-unplug the power cord at the back of printer
-after 30 seconds, plug the cord and turn on the printer. It will ask for the cartridge.
-Open the cartridge door and insert the cartridge
-close the access door
-if the error is cleared, try faxing again.

I solved this problem by returning my fax machine to where I purchased it and exchanged it for another type of hp machine and it automatically goes in long format when it scans long format paper. If it scans short letter form, it automatically copies itself and adjusts itself. Thank you aniway, durl

GENUINE HP cartridge?

It uses an HP 20 inkjet cartridge.
