Question about Canon PIXMA MP830 All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

More than one ink tank?

It seems that EVERYTIME I try to print it says that more than one cartridge of the black cartridge 5 is installed (as if that were even possible!) What can be done to fix this?

I had the same issue and reseated the #5 tank (always this tank). This went on for a number of weeks and now the error message has shifted to "The following ink tank cannot be recognized". I try reseating it, and the red light comes on recognizing it, but as soon as it goes through its processing I get the same "cannot be recognized" error.

Hmmm..so you are saying that the system is reading more print cartridges than exist..intriguing.

I recommend removing all old software for printer(all of it) and download fresh s/w from www.canon.com

and re install it then.

My large black ink cartridge with not print correctly on my Canon Pixma MP830. All the other colors work fine. I've done numerous cleaning and deep cleaning. Then replaced the cartridge and it still prints...

Are your black ink cartridges genuine Canon ones?
Are the contacts clean when you remove the cartridge?
If not blow off with compressed air and a clean brush, if necessary.

Canon.com's site covers the verification that the cartridges are installed correctly below:

Issue: Black ink does not print
Solution: Confirm that the recommended ink tanks are installed properly MP800R / MP830

Replacing an ink tank When replacing the ink tanks, confirm that the new ink tanks are installed properly. If the ink tanks are not locked into place, paper may not be fed properly, or ink may not be supplied to the print head. Recommended Ink Tanks:

  4. Press on the tab to release the ink tank, then remove it from its slot. If you are replacing multiple ink tanks, make sure to replace one by one.

  5. Check the ink tank. If the orange tape is as shown in Figure <1>, it is properly removed. If the tape is not removed (as in figure <2>, pleease remove the extra tape).

There are two black inks in the printer so that when you are printing only black and white such as printing a fax or when you set print in B/W for printed matter, the printer will use the larger ink cartridge. When you are printing in the multicolor mode (most people don't know the difference) the printer will use the finer black ink in the smaller cartridge. This smaller cartridge is used for photo printing and multi-color page printing. You cannot mix the two blacks since the larger cartridge is a coarser ink.

Not understanding why there's two black ink cartridges

One tank is reserved for colour printing and the other one is for grayscale printing ( Black and white). Watch out as when you run out of ink and you keep trying to print a document with empty tank cartridge it will cause your print head to go bad. The cost of a new canon print head is the same as the cost of a new printer. Canon over priced the print head.

The message seems to be saying that you have two black cartridges installed and therefore one of the colors is missing. Is that possible?

Refilling Ink in Canon Pixma MP830

Hello, I found this in a repair manual for the MP830. summery is to press and hold the stop/reset button for 5 or more seconds. I copied the info from the manual too. The remaining ink amount unknown. [1683] (Applicable ink tank icon) The remaining level of the following ink cannot be correctly detected. An ink tank which has once been empty is installed. Replace the applicable ink tank with a new one. Printing with a once-empty or refilled ink tank can damage the print head. If printing is continued without replacing the refilled ink tank, press the Stop/Reset button for 5 sec. or longer to record the use of a refilled ink tank. Note: After the above operation, the function to detect the remaining ink amount is disabled.
