Power to drive a gas refrigerator comes from one of two places. Electrical or LP gas. That is if your system is dual powered. It must be shifted over to gas if the electrical is turned off or disconnected.
A separate thermostat controls the gas end and an electric thermostat controls the electrical end. You must manually change the operating mode from one to the other. When in the gas mode no electrical power is necessary.

Your refrigerator has a freon that we call R-717 which is amonia. You have to heat the amonia to have refrigeration. using the 12 volt side will cause power drain on batteries. If you had to close the gas valve most of the way down this is telling me that he gas pressure regulator went bad. The 220 volt heater is still working that is why this is working. change the regulator and you should go back to gas for operation. If the helps give me a rating please. thank you.

MY FRIDGE CUTS OUT WHEN THE POWER FAILS EVEN IF THE POWER JUST FLICKS ON AND OFF WE CANNOT RESET IT HAS WE ARE ONLY AT THE COTTAGE WEEKENDS, SO WE LOSE EVERYTHING INSIDE

other than running your fridge on its own power source or fitting a gas operated fridge,(bottled gas) you must leave it empty, with the door open.....our friends in Canada have gas for heating and fridge /freezer and a generator, so they dont suffer any power cuts in winter.

Fridge went to gas when power went out. when power came back on fridge didn't swith back to power. worked until gas went out. is there a problem with a switch somewhere or does the unit need replacing

Many RVs / Coaches have the fridge power receptacle protected by a GFCI outlet that is located in the kitchen, perhaps bathroom, areas. Check to see if this outlet is tripped. If it isn't, try plugging a lamp into the fridge outlet to see if it works.

If it does, then the control board may have gotten spiked by a converter surge while power was being lost (also a sign of a failing converter). You can also measure the resistance of the heating element with a multimeter. You should see about 44 ohms (give or take 10%). If the heating element is out of tolerance, the fridge won't use it, but it should throw a code indicating a problem.

If the outlet doesn't work, look for other dead outlets in your coach. Double check GFCI outlets, make sure they are not tripped. And, of course, make sure that all your breakers are turned on, and not partially tripped as well.

Whirlpool refrigerator

When you switch on the fridge, do you hear the sound of compressor working OR when you touch the fridge there is little vibration. If not then the power is not properly connected. Check the power supply cord and ensure that wires are connected properly. Also check the power outlet in the wall. If above is OK then you have to get the gas checked up. There may not be sufficient gas. If the gas is OK then the condenser/compressor is not functioning for that you have to call a technician from the technician from the service center.

My Norcold DE0051 I have to keep defrosting every 2 weeks

Occasional defrosting is needed on these units. 2 weeks isn't that bad considering the environment that it is in (your boat). Every time that you open the door, moist air enters the fridge, and the moisture eventually collects on the freezer plate, and freezes. Putting foods into the freezer that are uncovered also contribute to this a great deal, as do putting in warm / hot foods before giving chance to cool down.

These freezers do not have automatic defrosters. The target environment typically has limited power available. Automatic defrosters would easily double the power requirements.

You can also check the door seals on your fridge as well. If they are not sealing properly, they can also let in humid air which then causes moisture to collect on freezer plate.

Fridge works fine on shore power. When turn gas

What model fridge? Sound like you have a bad 12 volt heat element or there is a possibility the board is bad but the likely is the heat element.
You can remove the cover on the circuit board and unplug the 12 volt element. Do an Ohms reading on the element. Should be 35-35 Ohms. If that is ok Turn the fridge on and with a VOM check for 12 volt power on the terminals the heat element was plugged into. If there is no power the board is bad. There is also a possibility the upper board is bad. I would start with the lower circuit board. Check for power at the heat element terminals if you have power there then I would say you need to replace the heat element. The heat element is mounted in the boiler tube and just slides uo to remove it. Good luck

Chemical odor

Hi serena38,

I'm Harvey the Master Plumber.

Your question is: You have a sweet chemical odor in our boat cabin, it leaves a sweet taste in your mouth. You cannot find the source. The fridge does not work. You can smell the odor stronger when the A/C is turned on or when the boat is closed up with the A/C off. Help????

Great, I live on a boat! I can think of two reasons for this. The first and most likly is electrical. Look carefully at the components especially the capaciter, it's on or near the motor. If it is leaking or out gassing, replace it. Wire corrosion can cause a wire to slowly give off fumes. These kinds of problems are common on a boat so look very carefully i.e. testing meter is helpfull here. I've already expirienced this and it sure was hard to find. Less likely is a freon leak. You won't smell the freon itself but if the oil is a little burnt, that can be smelly indeed. You will need a special leak detector for that. Anyway my money is on the electrical.

DE0061 draws power when not cooling

Hi captstu,

I'm Harvey th Master Plumber.

Your question is: Can you install an auxiliary thermostat on the DC power feed to stop the power draw when cooling is not required?

I understand your frustration. I live on a boat. Since the fridge thermostat is reducing the amp draw when the compressor is off, just remember to turn off the curcuit when you leave the boat and emptying the fridge. You are probly doing this already. Since any modification to a new unit voids the warranty I wouldn't go down that path. The unit should have been tested before installation. Water under the bridge. I agree with the manufacturer. I would tear it out and get a warranty replacement. Sorry, Norcold is right, this is the least painfull way out. It is beter than the cost of repair.
