you should completely un install the office suite before installing it again. If you can, I would greatly suggest, using the last good restore point before the main crash, this will put the registry back to original too.
latest laptops do not have compatability
with xp. if you want to install xp you will have to use third party software for accessing hdd & installing XP

I'd suggest there is a possible hardware error. You need to get into the bios and check the temperatures they'll be under 'system health' or similar. Also might be worth running a ram check. Download 'windiag' it's a microsoft program designed to check your ram and it is very good.
if you have purchased legal copy of Vista, you will be having a Part Number on the Vista DVD. Call Microsoft Tech Support and provide them with this Part Number. they will get a new product key. This will work for you.
