What a mess this was! I had followed all of the direction exact, and nothing worked right. I finally deleted the printers (all of them) and went through the add a printer wizard (find this by control panel, printers..) I had windows locate, then changed the file to USB as it tried to install on another location. FINALLY, after 3 days of trying... I can now print.
PLEASE NOTE: there was nothing in the resolution center to help me here, and I am not a computer geek, so it was definitely a "fun" install. This may resolve your issue.
Also, check the connection once it says it is installed by putting in a memory card and checking to see if you can view the photos on the card!

Refer to the printer's user's guide for instructions on how to scan and how to use other features of the printer. You can view the user's guide on your computer by going to the Start menu -> Programs -> Lexmark 3400 Series -> User's Guide. For instructions on how to scan documents or images for e-mailing, go to page 47. You can also download the printer's user's guide (for free) from the Lexmark website using this link: http://bit.ly/cSUqq8. Hope this helps. Thanks.
NOTE: MAKE SURE THE LEXMARK IMAGING STUDIO SOFTWARE OR THE LEXMARK OCR SCAN SOFTWARE (available in the installation disk) IS INSTALLED IN YOUR COMPUTER.
Yes, the installation cd has the All-in-One Center software. But, if you have already used that to install the software, I suggest you download the updated driver from the Lexmark website. Here's the link: http://bit.ly/c9GW5Y. Choose the correct driver compatible with your computer's operating system. Download and install the software. Hope this helps. If you need more assistance, leave a comment and I'll get back to it. Thanks.
If you are running Windows XP or Vista, you may use the generic driver for Lexmark 3400 series. All you have to do is to connect the printer to the computer and let the computer detect it. If the printer is not a Plug-n-Play device, the computer would allow you to manually select the generic driver.
Or, you may check any of the links below and download the driver for your Lexmark X3400 for free:
Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off.
I'd do both and reinstall the CD software program that came with
the printer. When the software program asks you to connect the
printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud
