Dell inspiron 1720 reboots randomly

Hi,
my system reboots with no obvious cause. 2 or 3 times an hour. dell support signed on the system and defragged my drive and disabled a lot of startup programs but no change. Hardware or vista?

    Thanks for trying!

My laptop is new (Dec). Have antivirus scanned with nothing found (Norton & trend micro). Am always connected via wireless. Laptop is continually plugged in. Was sent back to dell once. They replaced memory and optical drive. Maybe I just have a lemon?

I have the same problem with my Dell 1720. This is not a power supply issue, it does the same thing using the battery. The only time the sytem does not reboot is while it's operating in safe mode. I've installed all of the latest drivers for the entire system, with no change in the frequency of rebooting. I can not duplicate the conditions that cause reboot, even when duplicating the same execution of programs when it rebooted the last time. Please respond with any and all ideas. Thanks and have a great day!

I have the same issue. Just fricking reboots out of the blue. No reason, etc. But it seems to run just fine if you don't touch it. Passes all the diags I have thrown at it. Sent back to Dell 2 times already they replaced the Motherboard last time, still the same problem. They claimed the replaced the 1st time, but I marked the Motherboard with a small x with a sharpie.

But I am still clueless why it reboots. I had installed XP. Installs fine, seems to be ok installing drivers, XP SP3 ok. But eventually it starts to reboot. This is NOT A HEAT ISSUE, BAD MEMORY, Etc. I have tried all that stuff. Does anybody have any idea. I am currently putting Vista back on to see if this is some kind of XP driver issue of some kind.

kwenzel2158@gmail.com if you care to discuss this further.

Same problem, but only when plugged in, and only when it's sitting idle. The screen has blanked and next thing I know, it's restarted. I'm running XP pro sp. Been doing it since sp2 (what I installed originally). Using all Dell's latest drivers and BIOS.

Strange thing is that according the the event log, Windows doesn't know it was shutdown or think it crashed - it just shows the events for starting up. This is the only machine I know that does this. Very frustrating!

There are several reasons why a pc restarts: 1. there might be a virus that causes this, thry to scan your computer using the updated anti virus. 2. your power supply might be faulty, if your pc frequently restarts the 12volts supply is having a problem, you need to replace the power supply. 3. operating system error, you need to repair your OS. what i have suspected from the problem you relayed is that your power supply, you need to replace this.

Hi Art,

Dell Inspiron 1720 doesn't have an HDMI port. However, you may try using any USB to HDMI connectors available in the market which might help.

Thanks and Regards.

Hi I have Dell inspiron 1720 (17 inches) laptop with intel centrino- window vista ultimate OS Problem: after system boots up, just before windows login, it comes "Please wait" and again it...

That's an interesting problem. It sounds like it's applying new display settings, but I'm not sure why it would do so over and over again. I would suggest trying to start Windows in "Safe Mode". To do that, as the computer is booting, hold down the F8 key to get the "Advanced Boot Options" menu. Maybe this will get you to a normal login screen. If so, you should try to change your display settings to the simplest possible and then reboot. I hope this helps.

Hi there, Our Dell Inspiron 1525 specs are as follow: Windows Vista Home Basic Service Pack 1 Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 @2GHz 2GB RAM - 32-bit OS Symptoms are: - Freezes oftenly after random period...

Do you have any CD's thatcame with your laptop? If so, look for one that has "Diagnostics and utilities"listed under the "Contents". You will have to boot from that CD disk. To dothis, power on your laptop and tap the key to bring you to the "Onetime boot menu". Insert the CD and then select CD/DVD drive and hit key. Select the "Run the32 Bit Dell Diagnostics". Next select the "Express Test" and see if any errorsare detected. If no errors are reported, then your operating system software isprobably the culprit. The blue screen of death can be caused by hardware or software. If Diags pass you probably have a software issue. If you don't have the resource CD press the key while powering the system on. This will run theDell built-in Diagnostics.

Inspiron 1720 reboots randomly. tried reseating ram and cant find solution. the reboot happens usually when i try to use programs and just shuts down and restarts like nothing happened. help is very...

most likely related to the blue screen issues. a possible reinstall of the OS may be needed. To check if it is blue screen related, restart the computer, press F8 when system restarts, then select the option to disable auto-restart option on the advanced options menu and press Enter. Next time you use the system, see if it will still auto-restart or if you'll get a blue screen. If there is an error, a system rstore or OS repair or reinstall may also be needed.

Spilt drink on inspiron 1720. after letting dry

Make sure you DO NOT plug in your lap top to the power out let. This could cause a shock.
You see the Dell media direct, means your CMOS is OK.
But if Windows is not loading means the spill could have damaged your hard drive. I would strongly suggest you take it to a shop where they repair laptops.
This way you may have to replace your hard drive, but save your note book.

My dell e1505 will only urn on for a few seconds then shut down. It also has a black screen even when it's on. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

These are the steps that you need to take, and the instructions on how to do it:
1. Reboot into Safemode
2. Run a virus and spyware scanner
3. Defrag
4. Scandisk
5. Registry error repairing
6.Reboot into regular mode windows

Here is how to do it:
Reboot yor machine while holding the F8 key right as it boots back up. A menu will apear. Choose -->"start windows in safe mode with networking".
Windows will start in safe mode. Run an AVG virus scan, then run Defrag by exploring your computer, right click on C: drive, click PROPERTIES, then the TOOLS tab, click the "check now" button, and only checkmark the top box 'fix file system errors', then click ok, the computer will then tell you it will scan upon next reboot., Now click the DEFRAG NOW button. the choose defrag. After Defrag runs for about an hour and it is finished, restart the system. If is still won't run normally, go back into Safemode buy pressing F8 on reboot, then run a registry fixing program such as uniblue registrybooster, then reboot again. If it still won't run right, you may want to reinstall Windows and see if that works. If reinstalling windows doesn't fix it, it is definitely a hardware problem.
PRINT THESE INSTRUCTIONS AND KEEP A COPY NEAR YOUR SYSTEM FOR FUTURE PROBLEMS. THIS SERIES OF STEPS CAN FIX MANY PROBLEMS

If the above doesn't work, replace the battery.
Good luck.
James.

My dell inspiron 1720 keeps rebooting. Pressed

Yes. You'll need to replace the hard drive with that error code.

No matter you can't use that computer without replacing the hard drive.

If you have a warranty for the computer contact tech support for your dell, give them the error code you have
and they will immediately replace your hard drive.

Re seating the hard drive won't fix it.

Hope this helps!
