Plumbers putty on the inside lip of the drain assembly. Then insert drain assembly. Put the rubber washer on with tapered edge towards the sink. Then install plastic thrust washer, then nut. Be sure your leakage isn't coming from the raise lower lever (ball socket) if so tighten nut tight enough to stop leak, loose enough to allow movement.
Sorry to hear you are having problems with your drain Dave. It might be as simple as tightening the nut another 1/8th of a turn. You've got to be careful here as the plastic parts for the drain can easily break if too much force is applied. Hand tighten only.
If tightening it up doesn't work then disassemble the pop up and look at the rubber washer. See if there are any signs on the washer that might tell you where it isn't sealing against the underside of the sink. Check the sink to ensure it is not cracked or chipped around the bottom of the drain. If everything looks fine then reassemble the drain and look again for leaks. It's possible something could have become trapped between the washer and sink allowing a capillary action to let water escape at this point. If the problem persists try using a little bit of plumbers putty with the washer as there could possible be a defect in the porcelin or steel of the sink drain allowing water to escape. Let me know if the problem persists and we'll have another go at it.
I have the exact problem with the Moen Model CA84912 double handle bathroom water faucet. I did everything as instructed in the manual and the leaky water is still coming out through the waste seat, the drain gasket. I have done it twice (2) because I thought that I did not put on enough putty but the end result is the same, leaky leak. Very frustrating. I just tightening the drain nut as suggested by John and crossing my fingers.

SOURCE: can't remove metal drain assembly for moen
you must have a pair of stillsons or a wrench that can handle round pipe . under the sink you have the s/p trap . remove trap with two wrenches because you turn them in opposite direction to get full control . once you remove the trap wich is self explained . the plug and waste wich you are having the problem with is stuck in ther with putty or silicone or any thing like that so now you have access to the bottom of the waste you put your wrench on the waste plug and turn it any way you can left or right you want to break the water seal without breaking your sink the water seal [the silicone or putty ] is really tuff so you have to use full strength without breaking the sink like i said . the older the harder to get out . im a plumber and have had plenty of tuff ones but they allways give without cracking the sink so go hard but be careful as well
