After playing 'Call of Duty4', disc icon disappeared and won't return to recognize any disc. Tried hard-reset with power button, PS3 restore, reset default, different game and movie discs. Any help before I'm forced to call Sony? Thanks for your time.
See if a DVD works. For me, I know my Bluray is ruined because I can watch DVDs and play PS2 games fine but anything Bluray does not work. If a DVD does not work, you have more of a problem, if DVD does work you need a new BlueRay which Sony should take care of for you. If you don't have receipt, etc. like me you can buy a new Bluray (KES-400AAA) on Ebay and use this guide to install it http://edpsystemssupport.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=29&Itemid=45.
Hope that helps.

You can try to do a system recovery on your PS3. this will set your PS3 back to factory settings as the settings may have been changed during the use. Here is the process in which you can do a system recovery.'
PS3 Recovery Menu
Place the PS3 in standby mode
Press and hold the power button for a couple of seconds, you should hear a beep
Keep a hold of the power button for a couple more seconds, the PS3 should shut back down to standby mode
Once this happens, press and hold the power button again for a couple of seconds, waiting for 1 single beep.
Ignore this beep and keep it pressed until you hear 2 consecutive beeps, release the button.
I think you choose option 3 and then repeat and choose option 4. Once you are done with this, try out your PS3.
I suggest calling up Sony and seeing how far you can investigate with their help. If you're warranty is up, opening it up shouldn't matter. However if a sony rep cant solve your problem maybe you can be eligible for a new one or something like that. hope this helped
You need to RESTORE FILE SYSTEM on your ps3. Here is how you can do it.
HOW TO GO TO THE RECOVERY MENU OF PS3 SYSTEM
1. Make sure the ps3 is plugged in (stand by mode). 2. Put out your usb cable for the controller and the controller itself (do not connect yet). 3. Hold down power firmly, ps3 will turn on and then turn off, release power button when it turns off. 4. Hold down power again, you will hear a beep and then a double beep, when you hear that double beep release the power button. 5. Now you should be seeing something in your monitor that say "Connect usb controller", do just that. 6. After connecting the controller press PS button. 7. You are now in the recovery menu. 8. To fix the problem of corrupt data you can choose #3. 9. If you want to format your hard drive choose #5. Be aware that this option will delete everything that is in your hard drive. 10. Remember that doing #3 and #5 is not 100% to fix the problem of corrupt data, I say about 70%.
Have u tried cleaning the laser, and not with a cleaning disk as the lense on these are concaved and the cleaning disk only gets the edges, this would mean removing the Blu-ray unit stripping it and cleaning lense with cotton buds and lense cleaning fluid.
You have a (all too common) laser problem and need to get it serviced or replaced. This is happening to every 1 out of 10 PS3 units. The lasers are getting harder to get, and this (like gasoline) is causing the price to rise. I would call Sony first though. http://www.us.playstation.com/support/ps3
One person told me that if all else fails, to reset the system defaults. CAUTION: do not click on the "Reset PS3 System" !! It will wipe your hard drive.
Go to System Settings >> Restore System Defaults >>Yes. I have not been lucky enough to see this work, but it's worth a try.
i have that problem too although mines is 40GB version i thought it was the grand theft auto 4 bug that had fucked it up but now it looks like a sony problem , gonna have to send it back which i really dont want to do
