3 of 12 broken!

I was just trying to upgrade the system on my 12 u8668d 7.b based computers. 2 of them had virus problems and were not in use. I plugged in an extra hard drive and copied a full install using linux dd. One of the two not-in-use, and 2 others, now have the same problem: when I power on, they make click,click.... click,click.... sounds from near the power switch. Power light stays on, hard disk light flashes off in time with the clicks. They turn off only when I hold the power button. Same symptom with/without all peripherals including memory and hard disk, I have not tried without CPU. What is this and how do I fix it? I was careful, how has this happened to fully a quarter of the machines I've tried?

Recently I have purchase a Toshiba Satellite L650 I5311 laptop, its interl core I3 - 350 M processor, 2.40 Ghz, 3mb L2 Cache, 320 GB SATA, 4GB DDR3 RAM, onboard graphics, the problem is the system is...

Only things that i can think of is that Norton anti virus has been known to be a bit of a system hog, so maybe search for an alternative, otherwise you may have a 32bit version of windows installed, getting a 64 bit version installed might see some increased performance, but otherwise make sure you have limited programs at startup, the more programs you have starting at startup will fill up your RAM and in turn slow down file swappage because the RAM is full

The only thing that is really a let down with your new laptop is the onboard graphics card, but that shouldn't be effecting file swappage, only effecting graphical programs.

however it could be because your running a Video/Webcast as well as a couple of other documents your graphics card might not be able to handle it, sadly you can't upgrade a graphics card in a laptop.

hope this has helped

If it is a bad virus that won't let you do anything on the computer, follow the instructions on this link. If you can install programs on your computer, follow only steps 7 and 8 from the above link.

I have a dell inspiron 531s. it is freezing off and on. it would work well for a day then it would just freeze, not responding to the mouse or keyboard. i have reformated the hard drive change the memory...

I had the same issue. I upgraded to Windows 7 and things did work allot better but the hanging still occured. I ran system mechanic and found there was a drive problem. This was repared by the program.
The problem occured again last night and the system will not boot past the dell splash screen. I am thinking it might be the motherboard that is a fault. Mine is out of its 12 month warranty, so no way to get Dell to investigate further. Also check the systems logs after the hang happens and see if there was something logged that caused the hang.

I hope this helps?

Regards,

Lannon

Upgrading to Windows 7 from Vista with disks supplied by ACER

Try downloading CCleaner, which is free utility that will clean out all your temp files and also scan your registry for issues.

When a program is uninstalled, such as Kaspersky anti-virus, not all registry components are cleared out.

This is particularly the case if the program was a 30 day trial.

The registry retains details of the original installation to prevent consecutive 30 day trials.

CCleaner should clean it out. Run the Registry Issues component until it reports no issues found and then try your install again.
