The device must be charged with 5v and 2A.
As long as the generic charger suplies those values,
you should be fine...

I can either charge my GPS or Use it, but not both. I used to be able to do both at the same time.

You are using the wrong car charger. You need to get an OEM garmin car charger as they are built to specifications. Other generic chargers do not provide the right specs to power the unit properly and thats why it goes into "PC" mode.

I require a mains charger for Tomtom 4n00.001. I need to charge it from home

You can buy a Tomtom main charger but they are fairly expensive.

You can use a Main powered USB charger along with your normal PC Tomtom USB cable: it should ideally be rated at 1 Amp or more.

You might even have a suitable main USB charger on hand now as they often come with generic MP3/MP4 players and some mobile phones: I use my Huawei U8150 or E585 modem charger for that purpose myself!

Hope it helps.

THow to get at reset button.Tom tom not charging when plugged into 12 volt in car.

There is a small reset pin 'hole' underneath nearby the USB/Power plug.

However, if your GPS is charging when you plug it to a PC or Laptop USB port, then I would suspect that the issue is more a faulty Car Power supply/charger (could be the cable or plug if you can see the pilot light on the charger).

ps. A cheaper alternative/easier to find to an original Tomtom car charger is a generic 5V (rated at least 1 Amp) USB charger used with your Tomtom USB Cable (that is what I use myself).

Hope it helps!

I was having problems with the car charger CA-051, then, I used a T-Mobile charger, at first time worked, after that, the GPS Maagellan was dead. Is it possible that I have to order a new battery? or I...

Using non standard chargers is probably the problem. If the battery has suddenly become sogged since using this charger then it may have done more damage than you want to know about.
Was it the correct polarity +ve Tip? was it the right amperage?
Magellan are specific in recommending you only use their charger and with reason, its correctly made for it.

You can try the new battery angle, but get advice on the charger.
As a small note.. Car chargers do NOT fully recharge batteries in GPS. Use an AC or USB charger. The car charger is a maintenance power supply. Always fully charge the unit prior to use and do not plug to car power until engine has been started.
These are standard rules with all non hard wired GPS and phones, ( but not always in the manual, have to have service and new sales someway!)

Picture of computer and modem in screen when I plug in charger and cannot use gps.

you can try and reset it by pressing and holding the lower right corner of the screen, the slide the power switch to the on position till it starts..once it starts, let go of the power button and when you see the screen "do you really want to erase your data, let go of the screen and select yes and follow the instructions.

if that fails, your charger is probably faulty or maybe you just replaced it with a generic one...find another charger to try.

if that fails (i recommend this either way) download the web updater (HERE) and update the nuvi if you havent already.

normally the charger has gone bad, or a generic charger is the cause

if you need more help, just post back

I dont leave the Garmin in the car for fear of it being stolen (first model was stolen). So I put the Garmin in my purse which then got a quarter stuck in the card slot. Is this fixable?

Yes, but most likely the unit will need to be dissassembled. I would not use the unit with the coin inside as it can short out power leads that power the SD card. It may damage your Nuvi. I have fixed this problem before.

Unit will not turn on

Most GPS problems - Hangs, frozen screens, problems acquiring satellites, ETC, can be attributed to the device not having the latest firmware installed.
This firmware enables it to communicate with the satellites - but if they aren't speaking the same language they get confused easily. For Garmin GPS Automotive units, Garmin has you do the following before sending it in for repairs:
1 - SOFT RESET
2 - HARD RESET (CLICK HERE to see instructions for either reset)
3 - UPDATE the device using their WebUpdater software (CLICK HERE for that) Garmin is the only company that offers repairs AFTER the warranty has expired. They offer a FLAT RATE REPAIR service for units no longer in warranty. For Other GPS units please consult your owner's manual or their support site - as each model - and even manufacture dates - can lead to different reset procedures. TomTom
NAVIGON

MAGELLAN NEXTAR does NOT offer any types of Firmware or map upgrades or repair services. Instead - they have an exchange program to update to a new UNIT for around the same price as a repair would be. CLICK HERE for more on that. WARRANTY on most GPS devices is 1 year from the date of purchase. Broken screens are considered ABUSE - and not covered under warranty. Finally - If your unit is on the charger for HOURS, You've tried both the car AND USB type charger, and you turn it on... it stays on for a minute (or so) then powers down or never comes on at all - the battery has lost it's ability to hold a charge and must be replaced. Looking around YouTube - you can get a tutorial on how to CAREFULLY crack open just about any GPS. The tool(s) necessary typically are included with the battery purchase. Typically batteries run about $25 +/-. NiCd batteries are meant to be energized once a month so they keep active, and don't build up deposits that lead to their premature failure. I hope this was helpful for you. Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question!!!!!!!

Tomtom 'Mount to the car screen'-travelling voice fails

Are you using a generic charger? or the official TomTom one? While they might all be 12v output (car)- 5v input (unit end) they are different ampages etc. If you are using a generic car charger then a lot of GPS units consider it to be a computer and so goes to docking/sync mode.
The unit may only sound the voice properly if you running off a tomtom charger.
