Hi there jhill255,

Normally the lasers align themselves off of the disc place in them. If there is something where the laser is "out of whack" and not tracking regrettably most DVD Players don't have a tracking feature (again because its mostly automatic).

One option you might want to try is a DVD lens cleaner. Some claim to be able to re-align the lasers but they will at least dust off the lens and clean it up.

I hope this helps.

Pioneer HTD5 laser gain problem.

If you decide to change the laser include the whole assembly because it comes pre-aligned and the mechanism drops in hook the wires to the board and you are ready to go. From the description he has pulled all he can out of the laser. If you decide to go with the laser make sure he can align the laser otherwise you are wasting your money, I would consider a new unit with warranty.

My dvd player won't read my dvds. it attempts for about 30-60 seconds and then reads "no disk"

The laser is either dirty, or out of alignment or possibly too weak to read the disc. Try one of the laser cleaning disck with an alignment check I believe that maxell sells these, if you can't find one then a repair technician can adjust or clean i, but if the laser is no good then it will need replaced. Might be better to replace the unit before having a tech work on it or your costs will exceed a new unit.

Recently, my Curtis 1053 DVD player has stopped playing DVDs. It attempts to load them, and then says "Bad Disk". I know that the disks are not bad, because they play fine on other DVD players. I...

Over time dust and stuff can accumulate on the lasers that read the discs. You should try a dvd laser cleaner (its different then the disc cleaner you might purchase for a cd player). Its a disc that has a little brush on it. You insert it into the DVD player, you may need to run it 2 or 3 times, but when you use it, the little brush will clean the laser off. Another problem could be that sometimes the laser becomes mis-aligned, inhibiting the DVD players ability to read the discs. I would try the laser cleaner first as the only way to get the laser re-aligned is to take it to a service center and get it repaired. Our old PS2 stopped reading discs and my husband actually took the lid off of it and used a q-tip with some of the laser cleaner that comes with the dvd laser cleaner kit to clean the laser off - we're smokers and pet owners and it was just plain disgusting how dirty that little laser got! After that it ran fine and read all the discs that we thought had some how gone bad.

There are other possiblities too such as a bad laser motor, bad spindle motor (although I think this one is unlikely since you can hear it spinning) and other circuit related issues that can be causing your bad disc error. However these things would need to be diagnosed by an authorized service center.

I would say that as a general rule of thumb, if the cost of repairing exceeds 2/3 of the cost of a new unit, I would just buy a new one.

I have a Philips DVP642 DVD player. It has worked

First try a soft reset... unplug for 20 minutes.
Otherwise - the laser is dirty or misaligned.
A Repair shop can clean and align for about $50.
It takes specialized equipment and templates to align the laser - not something you can do on your own.

Lens cleaner discs don't work.

Nothing works

I've had Panasonic and other radio/CD/tape players quit reading CDs after the laser head lost alignment. I assume the radio is still working. The cost of a tech realigning the laser is likely more than the cost of a replacement. Lasers may be knocked out of alignment or drift off on their own.

Multipurpose units generally don't emphasize quality. With the low price of DVD/CD players, you may have a large radio now that wil fit on top of a new DVD player.

I have a Model MDP 1070 portable dvd unit. It works well on all modes except for playing dvds.I had it to a repair shop but with no success. They say that the laser reader is not tracking across the...

The laser may be lacking intensity, there may be a fault in the mechanical mechanism that the laser is riding on, and or there may be a defect in the electronics that runs the tracking alignment parameters for the laser unit.

To properly analyse these players requires some extensive instruntation, the service manual including the alignment procedure, and someone who is experienced at performing the procedure.

In reality, it does not pay to service these DVD players unless it is a very expensive unit. In this case it would be best to send the unit out for factory service.

Portable dvd player problem

Your laser that reads the discs is too dirty or is out of alignment.

Should clean laser every 20 hours of use with any DVD laser cleaner system. If you are technical you can remove parts to get to laser and clean with alcohol and Q-tip
Quick fix can be compressed air when door is open

DVD's also need checked for scratches and dirt as well

Bad disc problem

I assume you claned the laser lens.

It may be an alignment problem, or the laser is on the edge of proper specs, or there is an electronics fault in the reading of the laser, or the servo control that is on the edge.

You cannot test the laser by assumption. To know if it is up to proper emission, you need the laser emission tester for DVD and CD lasers.

If you are experienced at aligning CD and DVD players, to check the alignment you will need the factory alignment disks, a 100 mHz digital scope, DVM, and the service manual.
