Check you voltage regultor. the two out side legs shoud read around 13 volts and the middle one around 9. If they don't change it and try again.

Hey, stubby, Turn you mic gain wide open on the radio. That controls the modulation. Course if the radio has not been tuned that makes a big difference. Also the size of the antenna and how well it's tuned makes a big difference. Mechanic

Microphone problem

Hi,

I might be wrong, but a wiring problem sounds like the culprit here.

Where the mic connects to the PCB, inside the radio, something has come adrift, the fact that your keying is getting through means something is loose, open it up and have a good look at the connections, if you find the culprit, fix it with solder, but be very sparing and careful, you don' t want solder all over the area, else you'l stuff up the mic input completely.

I hope I'm right, and I hope this helps you fix it.

Cheers,
Peter

I have new cobra ltd new antannas and mounts can hear but cant talk

You say antennas,I assume co-phased,as long as they were installed correctly&adjusted for the lowest swr reading,we'll assume they are ok.Next step would be the radio adjustments ,there is a switch next to your meter that must be set to s/rf,another switch for cb/pa needs to be on cb and last the knob for mic gain needs to be set at about halfway to three quarters depending your voice level and mic type used..are you using the stock mic that came with the radio,if so you should be able to transmit..look at the meter when you key the mic and talk it should move with your voice. If your using an aftermarket mic such as a power mic, make sure the battery is fresh and the correct type, this may also not be wired correctly for your radio if bought second hand..next step would be taking vehicle w/radio to a reputable cb repair shop or technician to evaluate.Good luck and hope everything works out.

I can hear others but cant talk out

I may need more info then provided.

There are a few reasons this may be. If you are new to CB this could be 1 possible reason.

You may be experiencing "Skip". Skip is when the ionosphere is charged with energy by a solar flair(s), which causes radio waves to skip and bounce across them. Normally radio waves are line of sight. Meaning, the curvature of the earth prevents radio waves from traveling extreme distances. When skip is "Rolling" (meaning, skip is happening) the radio waves can bounce and skip around the earth and travel hundreds and even thousands of miles further then the typical 8 to 12 miles they normally travel.

There are a lot of guys out there that run "big power" using linear amplifiers to boost the power of their radio into the thousands of watts. They are more likely to "shoot a skip" much further then a "barefoot" radio. (radio alone with no amplification). Also they are very likely to key over lower powered signals.

So what may be happening is, you are hearing a CB operator(s) hundreds or thousands of miles away, who is running a lot of power. You can hear him because he is running a lot of power, so his signal goes very far.He cannot hear you either because your signal is not strong enough, or other CB operators running a lot of power are keying over you when you try to talk.

This is very like now because we are going into a solar flair cycle which lasts about 11 years. There will be an extreme amount of solar activity, so you will often hear skip rolling. Recently, in the past few months it has been going every day. Nights are usually quieter due to the fact that the sun is not out, although there may still be some skip going on.

You may like to try to shoot a skip. It will be hard with a barefoot radio on a busy channel. You may have luck in the evening on a quiet channel you hear a person or 2 talking. Try talking to them and ask them what state they are in. You may be surprised by what they answer.

If the issue is not skip, and you know who you hear is local, then there may be a few reasons.

You antenna may not be tuned to best SWR. Refer to your manual that came with the radio, and antenna under SWR.
If you ANT light comes on when you key, you have a bad antenna problem for sure.
If you have been keying it with that light coming on, and it has worked up until this point, you may have blown out your final transistor. Then the radio needs repair.
Your mic gain may not be high enough. For a stock CB you might as well turn it all the way up and leave it.

I have my radio hooked up in my jeep and i can hear other people talk but it seems that they cant hear me talking. Its all hooked up right. i checked to see if there was a tuning thing on it and there...

Turn up "MIC GAIN" also check and see if it keys up full scale 4 watts on output meter. If that doesn't do it change MICS. Go for a power mic by cobra that runs off say a double AA battery. It may be conditions also or your out of range of persons. check Antenna,Swr reads (should be 1.1 to 1.5)on a Radio Shack meter. Try it all.

Cb puts out good sound but when someone try to talk to me it all you hear is static

same thing sometimes happens to me. Usually it is because the person who is talking to you might have a weaker antenna. Sometimes people put a very strong transmitter with them and talk to people but you cant talk back.
So really they can't hear you good either. Just because you are too far away.

I can listen to the conversation on my CB, but I cant talk to the people that is transmitting the signal

there are several factors that can cause this:

  • your antenna is poor.
  • your SWR is high because you did not tune the antenna, or its a poor antenna.
  • the people you are talking too are far away, and your radio is stock and they have a peaked and tuned radio.
  • you are hearing skip, which is an atmospheric phenomenon that makes radio signals go thousands of miles more then it should, and the guys you hear are running extreme power. If its on channel 6 or 11, this is most likely the case and there is no way they will hear you unless you are running at least 3000 watts or more. channel 6 and 11 are known as the super bowl channels.
  • Your final output transistor has blown because of high SWR because your antenna was never tuned. Your radio will no longer transmit.

I just got my new midland CB and installed it on sunday. i can hear people however everytime i try to talk no one responds. The indicator light goes on and the rf meter goes up however i am not getting...

check the SWR. the antenna may not be tuned. Also, you may be hearing skip. If so, they are thousands of miles away, and you don't have enough power to talk to them.

Find some one close to test it.

Radio is receiving but is not sending out any messages

And you know its not sending out messages because no one is answering you, right. Well ,maybe no one in your area is on the same channel as you are or maybe some one listening but they feel some one else will answer you. hook an external speaker to the PA side of the radio output and see if your voice comes through. Then if you bridge the speaker out put of the cb/pa you chould be able to get talkback. If you can hear yourself talk then your radio is getting out but the question then is how far? Have you checked your SWR reading . You should be below a 2:1 to get out with a decent signal but a 1:1 to 1:5 is best. Actually another radio tuned to the same channel as you , set up a few feet away, should pick up your transmit so you don't have to hook up talkback. If you can hear yourself talk then your radio is getting out its just no wants to talk at the moment.
