If you would like to use two computers on the same intenet, you'll need to purchase a router. Linksys is one of the top brands in routers.

Routers allow you to connect a vast amount of computers to your inter. The router connect to your modem and then you connect the two computers to your router.

A decent price of a router is about 49.99. Here is a good one from Best Buy: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp;jsessionid=ODENRVPZTXBBRKC4D3JFAGI?_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&id=pcat17071&type=page&st=linksys+router&sc=Global&cp=1&nrp=15&sp=&qp=&list=n&iht=y&usc=All+Categories&ks=960

What is the IP address for 2WIRE378

If your 2Wire is functioning as the DHCP server, and has assigned your computer an IP address (and the LAN network light has gone green on the 2Wire) then you should be able to find the 2Wires address by looking at the Default Gateway address given to your computer.

On Windows XP, you can see this quickly from a Cmd window by typing in IPCONFIG /all and look for the listing under Default Gateway.

Try putting that IP address into your browser to access the 2Wire.

If your 2Wire is not doing DHCP (IE: It may be in bridge mode) and your computer cant figure out the 2Wires IP address (or the LAN Network light is not green) you will need to download and install a packet capture utility such as Ethereal (www.ethereal.com) and look for network traffic from the 2Wire.

Download and install Wireshark and then hook the 2Wire up via an ethernet cable directly to your computer.

Start the packet capture on ethereal and let it run for a minute or 2.

Stop the capture and look for ARP messages in the form of:

ARP Who has zzz.zzz.zzz.zzz? Tell xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

The xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx should be the IP address of the 2Wire.

Say for example you see:

ARP Who has 192.168.2.111? Tell 192.168.2.254

This is the 2Wire at 192.168.2.254 looking to communicate with another machine (that likely does not exist, but thats ok.)

Write that IP address down so you can try it in the browser in a moment.

Now you need to statically assign your computer to be in the same subnet as the 2Wire.

That is you need to set your machines IP address to be like 192.168.2.5 (the .5 is just an arbitrary IP address) and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

That should allow the computer to talk to the 2Wire.

Enter 192.168.2.254 into the browser address bar and see if the user interface comes up.

If it does not, in some circumstances you may need to try a netmask of 255.255.0.0 on your computer and then try 192.168.2.254 in the browser again.

Once you have the user interface up and running you can reconfigure your 2Wire to what you need, either by adjusting things or doing a factory reset and starting over.

Can I connect a second computer (not a laptop) in my bedroom wirelessly to the 2wire modem that I have connected to my main PC?

Yes, you can. just make sure that the computer has a wireless capability, if not then you need to connect a wireless adapter so you could connect the computer to your 2wire router wirelessly. Another possible way to have it hooked up to your 2wire router is via Ethernet cable but depending on the distance you may need a longer cable.

No ethernet connection on my computer thats hooked up directly to the 2wire router. how do i acquire ethernet connection?

My guess is that the 2wire router has a DTE plug and a DCE plug. The DTE plug is meant to plug in to your DSL modem, while the other plugs are meant to plug into computers.
If you move the plug, it might work, assuming you have an upstream and downstream connection on the router.
Failing that:
Make sure the cable is an ethernet cable and not a phone cable,
Make sure the wires are run straight through. If it is a crossover cable, it might be meant to connect a DTE to a DTE without a hub, and it won't connect a computer to a router port.
Try a different cable.
Try a different computer (borrow one, etc.)

1.can i use my 2wire 1800hg with vista?hooked up to ethernet connection.- yes its possible make sure you enable dhcp on your lan side of you router and under tcp/ip on your pc set it to authomatic assign IP address and dns server address. most router use 192.168.1.1 as thier default address to access it.

to fix your passkey problem.need to access the router and try to change the passkey then save and don't forget to restart the router after you save it,by unplugging it. "make sure your passkey is 8 characters long"

I need help installing my 2wire wireless adapter card.

I used this one:

Introduction
============
This document describes the procedure to install driver for the 2Wire Wireless USB Adapter under Microsoft Windows, and to run a wireless configuration program to configure your 2Wire Wireless USB Adapter to work with a 2Wire HomePortal or OfficePortal wireless gateway. These drivers work under Microsoft Windows 98SE, ME, 2000, and XP.

STEP 1 - Driver Installation
============================
1. Make sure your 2Wire Wireless USB Adapter has not been connected to your computer USB port.
2. Double-click on the file to run WinZip Self-Extractor. The driver installation files will be placed in your hard disk in the C:\TWWUSB_TEMP directory
3. Connect your 2Wire Wireless USB Adapter to an available USB port in your computer. Windows Found New Hardware Wizard will startup.
4. Select the option to search for driver in specific location. Specify C:\TWWGUSB_TEMP as the location of driver.
5. Follow on-screen instruction to finish driver installation.

STEP 2 - Wireless Configuration
===============================
1. Run the program WirelessCfg.exe in the directory C:\TWWGUSB_TEMP. You can do so by clicking on the Windows Start button and select Run. The Windows Start button is typically at the lower left corner of the screen. Type in C:\TWWGUSB_TEMP\WirelessCfg.exe to launch the program.
2. Follow on-screen instruction to configure your wireless setting. Enter the serial number and encryption key as they are printed on the bottom of your 2Wire wireless gateway.
