Okay, guys, here is a really easy question, I hope. My son has a Memorex Model MVDP1072 7" widescreen portable DVD player and he can't find his manual (and he's 700 miles away from here). He never has figured out how to recharge his rechargeable battery.
Could someone walk me through in TOTALLY simplistic manner how to recharge this battery. For instance, do you have the player turned on or off when recharging? Is there a control panel button/switch to set?
I am concerned that he might have botched the recharge the first time he tried, since he didn't know what to do, and set the battery "memory" at the wrong end, but I hope this is a different kind of battery.
I don't own that model of DVD player but in most cases if the battery is built into the player then by connecting the DVD player to a power source should charge up the battery. There should not be the need to switch on the player during the charging of the battery.
Regards Brian

Thanks, all. We downloaded the manual and my son walked through the steps (external battery, one adaptor/power cord for the unit, leave unit off during charging), but the charge light didn't come on, and it didn't seem to charge. We might have a bad battery I suppose, or else he's maybe not attaching it to the player correctly. The charge light does come on when the unit is on with the battery in, but the battery doesn't seem to charge then.
I might have a better idea of it when he comes home from school in a few weeks. Thanks, again, for your help!

Most portable electronic products will charge whether they're turned on or off, but charge faster if off. There usually is some sort of indicator: a light that blinks during charging and changes to steady when done, or one that changes from red to green, or similar.
As Brian said, it probably charges right in the unit. However, if there's a separate charging cradle, then the battery may have to be removed and charged in that.
"Memory" is an artifact of the charging process, not a setting. NiCads are especially prone to this; they should be fully discharged before recharging. With more modern batteries, like NiMH, this is much less a problem.

used in Audiovox DVD players. I've burned out two of them in two years. The guys at Radio Shack tell me it's the most common failure on these units, the brushes don;t hold up. My real aggravation is I can't find a replacement motor, and don't think much of spending $200 for a new player every year.
