Ed,
Open the back and take a look at the saw tooth filter cap. It's the largest cap you'll encounter in the PS. Just follow the electrical cord onto the board and look for a VERY large electrolytic cap in that area. Usually they bow at the top on a strike like that. Replacing the cap might restore the unit.
If not do you have an esr meter?

It's hard to find new parts for older sets like that one. It is very common to have to get boards rebuilt in older sets. Being the a/v board, I would feel pretty safe using a rebuilt board as long as lightning doesn't hit again. There isn't much that will cause one to fail other than lightning. A lot of shops will give you an estimate to replace the set, that you will then give to your insurance company if it's going to be that expensive.

My home was struck by lightening and my 48 inch HD tv is not working but makes a strange noise. I need a repair person to give me an estimate for a repair or replacement for my insurance. can you help?

I have worked on many televisions in my time and have yet to bring one back to life after a lightning strike.
My best suggestion is to get a quote from a local servicer and get a replacement from the insurance company.
If you need any further help please reply to this post.
I hope that this helps you with this issue.
Thanks for using Fixya.

Tv won't come on

Typical reset sequence is: unplug the set, press the power button a few times ( Yes, with the set unplugged ). Then, hold the power button down and at the same time ( maybe with your other hand ) plug the set in. If that doesn't do it, there may be a button marked reset on the back of the set. If there was a lightning strike nearby, your set is probably toast. The antenna or cable brings it into the house.

Lightning struck the cable tv line coming into the house. All of the electronics connected to the cable quit working. I took the back off of one of the tvs, and could not find any sign of scotch, burn,...

A lot of electronic devices have built-in on-board surge suppressors such as MOV's, and avalanche diodes - these could get damaged during a lightning strike. Fuses are another possibility. Beyond that, gotta take out your DMM and oscilloscope and start troubleshooting, or see a technician.

Lightning strike

This model is famous for capacitors being bad in the low voltage regulators on the signal board. Also has been known for cold solder connections in the power supply to the convergence IC. I don't have my notes at home but I belive that model only uses one IC for convergence, STK393-570. You cant see it from the back because of it being hidden by its heat sink.

Surge from lightning strike damaged tv and won't turn on.

Unless you are skilled at trouble shooting power supplies , you will be better off getting a skilled repair center to repair yourset. If its repairable I have seen surges from lightning strikes make the set no longer cost effective to repair.

Help!

It is possible that the HDMI ports are blown. The work through their own circuit area in the TV set. This is a particularly complex area.

You will have to send the set to the authorized service rep for an estimate. See if your home insurance plan will cover for this type of thing. Some types of home policies will cover for this type of thing. The cost of servicing your set may be expensive. Damage from a lightning strike will not normaly be covered by warranty.

Lightning strike

Hello bkindle.....not a boat anchor YET!!!! Had similar problem with WS-55513 and it turned out to be a faulty DM board. There are 4 capacitors on the board that may have blown. If yo can solder, it is a pretty easy repair. I purchased a PDF manual for mine online to get familiar with the model.

Otherwise, you can expect to pay between 275.00 for a repaired board OR between 350.00 and 450.00 for a replacement board from Sears or Mitsubishi.

Hope this helps. I know it is frustrating but be patient.

Good Luck - Richard (MetalDad)
