I have a Compaq presario f760el, the cd drive don't work,its icon disappeared from device manager, i tried to completely reload windows, but OS don't see the drive. I also tried to apply some microsoft fix, the HP diagnostic program don't works, I detached and reconnected the drive with no results. Can someone suggest me? Thank you.

If your OS, its now starting good, it depends, on a great amount of issues, from viruses, bad boot sector, bad drivers, bad boot files, or corrupted ones a lot indeed. but for help you quick, do these steps
1) go into safe mode, windows 7, xp,
2) verifify in control panel and device manager, if is missing any device, and then restart,
2) do in safe mode, an restore checkpoint **
3) if any of those not work, reinstall windows.

For that problem, Try first replace that internal DVD-rom drive other good internal DVD-rom drive. if not Also Detected or recognize.
Try this second solution. insert external USB type DVD-ROM. if not recognize also, Your operating system Have internal software device data corrupted. You need to reinstall operating System like windows xp, windows 7 (OS) etc.. to fix data Corrupted of operating system device for hardware software.
Please see sample external DVD-rom USB type.

Using Windows 7,

1) Click on the Start button (Windows logo button)

2) Click on Control Panel

3) Click on System and Security

4) Click on Device Manager in the list.

5) After Device Manager populates click on the + sign next to DVD/CD-ROM drives

What is the manufacturer name of the optical drive? (In this case a DVD drive)

IT'S 16 years old, there is no support for it now. sorry.

we get these here all the time, and no OS stated
why post with out stating what OS this is,
?w98, w2k, XP, VISTA,W7,W8, w8.1 W10.?
nor showing the DVD model there, it has s specific model name
and number (vast types used and sold)
DVD from store, or one you made or others made by hand.
home made or factory made store bought DVD?'
did you try this?
did you try other DVD movies? or look for the VOB files on them?>
Testing 123, easy to harder,
1: try a music CD first. store bought not home made.
2: look for files on any install CD, using the local file manager.
my computer, this computer, or what ever ms calls it this year.
we look to see if the PC can see the files on a real CD. first.

even the HP install CD, or other CD that are not for music or movies, if it cant read a CD, and see fails drive is bad.
or its drivers are missing or corrupted,(virus or?)

3: if this fails open the control panel, (start , CP) then look in device manager (on XP it tricky to get there so tell us if it's XP)
no OS stated, so....no operating system stated.
if the Device manager fails to show the DVD DRIVE,
this means :
A: bad. drive.
B: drivers for the drive are missing (hp has them if still HP DVD drive)
C: the OS is corrupted.
D: running XP , the Dead OS, with out SP3 service pack 3 will be very bad experience in all ways. it has DVD driver in said pack.
E: not running the HP drivers, that hp has. (but HP does not support 16 year old PCs at all) so getting them now is super hard.



the users manual mentions windows 98.
omg is it that old?
the same manual says , only select models has DVD drive.
to make DVD work , special software from HP was installed.
From HP, not MS.

IF it is HP PC than you can simply go ahead a reload the factory settings in the OS from the Recovery partition without the help of the CDs. Every HP pc have a separate partition where the image of the entire OS is loaded. you can simply go ahead and reload it from that partition. Just follow the following steps-
1. Turn off of the pc completely.
2. Disconnect all the external devices and the internet connection.
3. As soon as you turn on the pc start tabbing the F11 key( for Windows Vista).
4. It will take you to the recovery manager and from there you can just follow the onscreen instructions.

1.Check withBISO whether CDROM is there?
2.If shown in BIOS then set the boot priority to CD ROM and try with bootable disk,If booting reinstall the OS and If not then u will have to chthe CD ROM

Allot of steps in this issue, hope this will help.

Check the drive itself and see if it isn't loose in the carriage. Make sure the screw that holds it in place isnt loose or missing. Try this as a test: shut down the laptop. Press and hold the faceplate of the drive. While holding the faceplate, turn on the laptop. See if Windows detects the device again. If not (while still pressing on the faceplate) go to Device Manager and see if Windows sees the drive again.
The above trick you used is in case a CD burning program was improperly updated or uninstalled and it damaged the identifying drive filters. Each of those entries has more than one set of reg entries in the keyset. Make sure youre looking for the one for the CD/DVD drive. DO NOT DELETE entries for any other devices!!!

check your dvd in bios. is it recognised in bios ?
also try to push your dvd, dvd connection to motherboard might be loose.

the problem is with the Port that your connect with the Computer with the cs/dvd drive it is damaged or malfunction you have to either check your mainboard it has the problem , for that pls confir the same cd/dvd drive in another computer if it works fine , then it your main board Ok.
