I need to know how to set the tension. I need to know how to thread the bobbin. I need to know if the needle makes a difference. My stitches are loose and sloppy. They should be interlocking between...

Would be helpful to know what model machine you have.
A new machine should not need tension adjustment, so guessing it is not being threaded correctly. There should be adequate instruction on how to do this and how to wind a bobbin in the manual.
The main thing is you need to have the presser foot UP when you thread the top thread. This opens the tension discs so the thread will go between the discs and be put under tension once the presser foot goes down before you sew. When you thread the bobbin, be sure it is unspooling in the correct direction and that it clicks into its tension slot. A Universal 80 needle will do for 95% of what you sew, exceptions being very lightweight fabric, knitted fabrics, or very heavyweight fabric.
Write a reply back to Fixya if this does not help you, but include more detail on just exactly which machine you have.

Need to know how to thread up overlocker :-)

Here is a threading guide - http://www.singerco.com/pdf/14SH654_threading.pdf

Before you start, raise the thread antenna to it's highest position.

Open/set the tensions to zero.

Raise the presser foot.

Turn the handwheel until the loopers are at the highest position.

Place thread spool on the spool pin at back right top of machine. From there, thread through 1) rear thread guide (little hook), 2) front thread guide (front hook), 3) down and up through the thread tension dial from right to left so that thread picks up the thread spring check (the little spring on the left of the tension dial). 4) Through the thread take-up-lever, from right to left (the little lever that goes up and down). 5) Through the thread guard and guides (one on the front, one on the needle arm). 6) Through the needle, front to back. Yet another stitch tension problem...

Thank you, thank you! I just tightened the screw on my bobbin case and that instantly fixed my thread tension problem. How on earth are you supposed to know about the little screw?! I thank you so much for the tip!
