When it finds a problem in the electronic-control system that it can't correct, the computer turns on a yellow warning indicator that's labeled "check engine," "service engine soon" or "check powertrain." Or the light may be nothing more than a picture of an engine, known as the International Check Engine Symbol, perhaps with the word "Check." In addition to turning on the light, the computer stores a "trouble code" in its memory that identifies the source of the problem, such as a malfunctioning sensor or a misfiring engine. The code can be read with an electronic scan tool or a diagnostic computer, standard equipment in auto repair shops.

Its always better to get it checked as soon as possible..For time now you can drive...

Check engine warning light remains on

relax.if nothings happened apparantly for the last 200 miles, then he may take it to the beach, provided he is ready to risk anything . it may be a electrical problem or simply a gauge problem .if it was something more serious ,the dodge would have conked out. i hope this puts your worries at rest.

1999 Dodge Durango. Brake Light and the ABS Light

If you backup lights are not working as well, I would say check the fuse for the backup lights, if the fuse is good, see if you are getting power to that fuse. We had this problem and after weeks of searching and changing sensors, we found the backup light fuse was good, but not getting power. Ran a wire from that fuse to the cig. lighter fuse and all woprksf great.

1999 Durango will die sometimes while driving

Sounds like a bad starter. A bad starter won't trigger the Check Engine light and will start when cold but when it heats up, requires more power to start when it heats up. Best of luck.
