Try a new data cable and a direct connection (if you have a print server or USB hub connected). Scanners require bi-directional communication and can fail when the printer itself works.
Do you have the full software installed or a generic driver? What OS do you have? To see what software/drivers are available: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=PRN_ALL_A926&os=WLH&osl=en&catid=&impid= and choose your OS in the drop down menu. Did you launch the scan from the computer or from the all-in-one? Are you running the monitoring program on your computer (to launch a scan from the unit, this must be running to "listen" for the button press)? Did you set up the software for the destinations for those buttons? Launch scans from the computer first.
Uninstall any generic driver from the OS and unplug the data cable
(USB). Then install the software or driver from Dell. Generic drivers
often only run the printer.
The full software (and the monitoring program) are not available for Win7. You need to use Windows Fax and Scan (New Scan) or Paint (File > Import from Camera or Scanner) to acquire scans. XP and Vista can also use Paint. (Some versions of Vista also have Windows Fax and Scan as well as Photo Gallery that can acquire scans.)
I hope this helps.
