If the saw ran without oil, it may be that the ring(s) have stuck in the piston groove due to metal transfer from the piston into the ring groove. Sometimes you can see this by removing the muffler and looking into the exhaust port--the end result is no/poor compression=no start. If this is the case you will have to disassemble the saw to replace the rings & the piston.

My chainsaw is hard to start and when it does start and i start to use it it will die

First and foremost. The right mix of oil and gas is essential to any 2 cycle engine running/performing properly.
I always use at least a 90 octane gas. My Poulan is a 40:1 ratio mix, and I use synthetic oil. I only keep enough oil and gas mix that I am going to use within say 2 weeks. This keeps my saw running great.

I have also bought a carb tool to make sure I am running tip top. You can find a very very useful video of this on YouTube posted from donnyboy73. I have added the link below.

Hope this helps.

Regular gas (not 2 cycle) was put in my Poulan Pro chainsaw

If it was not run, or was shut down before it seized, drain the fuel
refill with 2 cycle mix (double oil if the saw had been run).
Start it and run under light load till empty.
if it seized a total rebuild will be necessary.

Reg gas in 2 cycle chain saw

Hi wiley
Your chainsaw is probably good for the junk heap if it is ceased or locked up.
If you can still pull it thru, drain out all the non-oil gas and refill with gas and oil mixed to the normal mixing for your chainsaw.
Give it a crank and hopefully all will be good to go for a while

What are the steps to getting the chain saw started and idling? What are next steps to cut tree limbs and oil the chain? This chain saw was given to me without a manual.

If you are a complete novice you should seek some training before attempting to use the machine, as you do not say what model this is we will go through basic starting procedures, fill the fuel tank with fresh fuel mixed with two stroke oil at 25-1, fill the chain oil tank with a non fling chain oil, switch the ignition switch to on, pull the choke fully out, push in the deco valve if fitted, place the machine on the ground, with the tip of the bar away from any obstructions, put your right foot through the back handle to hold the saw down, place your straightened left arm and hand onto the top handle again to hold the machine, now with your right hand crank the engine until it fires once, at this point push the choke fully back in, crank the engine once again until it fires up, flick the trigger to dissengage the part throttle , the machine should now idle.
Be carefull.

New saw - will not start. Have put in premium gas/oil mix. Getting spark from plug when cord pulled. Hasn't even fired once.

It's possible the brake is on. Try pushing the brake forward then pulling it back until you hear it click. Then try cranking it again.

My saw runs a few minutes then gets hot and wont start

What is the ratio of the oil/gas mix?
Sounds like it is not getting sufficient lubrication.

Add 1/2 oz (about 1/2 shot glass) of 2-cycle oil to the gas tank and try again......

Check to be sure that you have LOTS of chain oil in the chain oil tank!!

Chain saw emitted sparks and now does not start.

Hi

When the engine get warm and die(I suppose)check the spark at the sparkplug. You can let the saw run until it ran out of gas and you will not distroy the engine.Change the sparkplug.

Poulin chainsaw

no big deal people do it all the time - drain the oil out best you can then put some gas in and shake the saw to mix it up . now drain that fuel and put in fresh - if the saw doesnt fire up you may need to remove spark plug and crank over to remove any oil if it got into the cyl - try to start again - if still wont fire up remove air cleaner and put some fuel directly into carb . I use a pump type oil can to put fuel in carb - once it fires keep it running on high till it stops smoking then reassemble air cleaner - this should solve your prob . keep me informed enginedoc
