Question about Sony VAIO Notebook

1 Answer

Ac power My computer is having an issue with the power supply. The computer started suddenly asking me if I wanted to conserve power while on battery, yet it was plugged in. I unplugged it noticing that the battery had plenty of charge. I took a (very) long break, and when I returned the battery had run down. I plugged it in and it wouldn't open up long enough for me to do anything, so I left it overnight, the power supply light was lit, so I know it was working, and the battery charge light was flashing. But when I open it now, it imediately goes into hibernation. It seems like there must be something wrong with the part inside the computer that the charger/power supply plugs into. How can I test it when I have no way to recharge my battery?

  • just remove the battery and connect power adaptor.
  • power on the power switch.
  • try to boot tha lap.
If every thing goes well then you have to replace your battery, it might be faulty.

Thanks

I have a Compaq Presario R3000 with Windows XP OS. Until recently it had been working fine. Suddenly, the power went off while still connected to the AC Supply and the Laptop just went off. The battery...

1. Remove battery from the laptop. 2. Unplug the power cord from the computer. 3. Let the computer sit for a few min. 4. Leave battery out. 5. Connect power adapter to computer 6. Push power button to turn computer on. 7. If computer powers on shut down again, and put battery back in. 8. Push power button to turn computer back on (at this point battery and power adapter should be connected to the computer)
If computer powers on with power adapter with the battery out. You are having a battery issue. You would want to look into replacing the battery. If computer does not power on with just the power adapter. You are most likely having a power issue. Depending on how old the laptop is. You will either want to contact the manufacturer. Or take the computer to a computer repair shop, or consider replacing the laptop.

You either have a faulty a/c connection and need to buy a new one at any common electronics store, or your battery cannot hold a charge.

If a PC suddenly fails to boot properly, you should perform a hard reset as the first action. Performing the hard reset will correct many problems. If the computer still does not start properly, select your symptom from the list below to guide you to the recommended corrective actions.
  1. Disconnect all peripheral devices and remove all USB devices and SD media cards. You want to test the computer not the accessories!
  2. Disconnect the AC power adapter, remove the battery, and then press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds to drain all residual power and restore default startup settings.
  3. Reconnect the AC power adapter (but do not insert the battery), Press the Power button, Look for glowing LEDs near caps lock and num lock keys, and Listen for sounds of a fan or other moving parts turning.
  4. If the computer does not start, the LED lights do not glow, and the display is black, you can perform one or more of the following actions to resolve the no power issue.
    • Verify the computer is receiving power from the AC adapter . Verify that the AC adapter is not damaged and is connected correctly to a working wall outlet plug. Verify AC power is connected to the system board by examining the AC adapter, wiring, and pin connection for damage. The keyboard LEDs will glow when AC power is connected to the system board. Damaged components, like the AC adapter or the pin in the power connector, may require an HP-certified repair.
    • Use a different AC power adapter . If you have access to a different AC adapter or power pack that is designed for the computer, connect it to the notebook and try to start the computer. If you own or have access to more than one notebook, verify that you are using the adapter which belongs to the notebook. CAUTION: Using a power adapter that does not meet the power requirements or has the wrong type of connector may damage the computer. On newer notebook models, connecting the wrong adapter to the notebook may cause the power LED lights to blink but not power the computer.
    • Remove the battery and boot on AC power only . A discharged or defective battery may prevent the AC adapter from supplying enough power to start the computer. To verify that power from the AC adapter is available for PC; remove the battery, connect AC power adapter, and press power button. If available, try using a different AC adapter, that is rated for the PC, and repeat this test.
    • Remove the AC adapter and boot on battery power only . A defective AC adapter may not charge the battery and prevent the computer from booting on battery power only. To verify battery power available for the PC; connect AC power adapter, allow battery to charge for 30 minutes or more, disconnect the power adapter and press power button. If available, try using a fully charged battery, of the same type, from another computer and repeat this test.
      • If LEDS do not glow and the fan or hard drive do not spin, battery may need to be replaced.
      • If tests of both the battery and the AC adapter fail, there may be a problem with system board requiring service by HP.
      • If LEDs glow and PC boots, the AC adapter may need to be replaced.
      • If LEDs glow, but PC does not boot go to LEDs glow, fan is heard, but display is black or blank section.

I've had a similar issue and believe the problem could be one of two things. 1.) Your power supply, so you may want to disconnect and reconnect (very firmly) the powersupply to the computer, wall, and inbetween if you have two cord device. Also you may want to try a different electrical outlet. 2.) It could likely be the power connection to the motherboard, you can test this by "gently" applying constant pressure to where the power supply connects to the laptop. You can do this by slowly, but gently, pressing up, down, left and right on the connector to see if the power on your laptop goes from battery use to "On AC Power". I would suggest imanging the face of a clock and starting at 1 o'clock and moving ever so slowly around to 12 o'clock. If your AC Power does kick on then it is definately your motherboard connection and a repair or replacement for the motherboard is in order. *** NOTE press gently, if this is not the problem you don't want to break it and have this become the problem. ***

Hope this helps, Best Regards, -md

Make sure you have power at the wall outlet (Dumb question, but I have to ask). If your AC power cable is detachable from the laptop transformer, make sure it is plugged in tightly. If there is a LED on the transformer, make sure it is on. If you have a voltmeter, check for DC voltage at the power supply plug where it plugs into the laptop. You should have between about 10 - 14 volts there. If you don't have a voltmeter (or multi-meter), see if you can borrow one.

If your battery was not seated properly or was worn out, then obviously it would not charge, but the laptop should still function off the power supply, so it is probably not a battery issue. If the voltage input and cable condition checks out okay, then it is probably a bad power supply.

No juice

Sounds like a battery issue. Try powering up without the battery, just AC. If it powers properly, then the battery needs replaced. If it doesn't then it may be the power supply malfunctioning, or the motherboard.

Was the laptop on when it turned off? It may be a PSU problem but we can determine this by removing the battery. Make sure you disconnect the AC adapter while your removing the battery. Inspect the contacts and make sure`there are no black marks or any other dirt. Leave the battery out and plug in your AC adapter. Try the power again.
There are a couple of possibilities in terms of problems that I can suspect so far. Did anything out of the ordinary happen when the computer just stopped working all of the sudden.
1. Battery has failed and short circuited the contacts 2. Power supply failure 3. Motherboard could have failed in style. 4. Power contacts for the AC adapter are damaged.

How can I increase battery life?

Transferring images from the camera to the computer requires a lot of battery power. It is recommended to use the AC adapter when transferring pictures to conserve battery life. If not using the AC adapter, make sure your batteries are fully charged and use the highest possible serial speed when connecting the camera to the computer. After transferring your images remember to shut off the camera, otherwise the camera will remain "awake" and will continue to wear down the batteries. The LCD display also uses much battery power and should be used sparingly when trying to conserve power usage. Battery life can be improved by using AA sized lithium batteries, rechargeable AA Ni-Cad batteries, or rechargeable AA Ni-MH batteries instead of AA sized alkaline batteries.
