can you check a power supply not installed in a computer using a volt meter to check voltage ( power connections that connect to the disk drive or the like and get a volt reading while power supply is connected to 110 volt line, and what should this voltage reading be?  5 volts or what??   thanks for your help and when replacing the power supply do you have to do anything other than install and plug the connections to the motherboard and drives??

On the motherboard there is a row of pins marked: HDled, spkr, power, reset etc. It sounds like the wires to the power pins are not attached correctly. These wires go to the power button on face of the computer. If these wires are not correct, no power will get to the motherboard and the unit will do nothing. You will need a magnifying glass to see the words that designate what the pins do.

Flicknasty, take cover off and check with small light and look at all the caps (capacitors) to see if any are raised. Look like mini barrels. All it takes is one to shut your machine down and keep it down. If you find one or more, the logic board is no good. Also check fuse where power connection is on the logic board. Make sure you are not plugged into machine with AC before testing with meter.

What made you think it was the power supply?
When you plug in the computer with the old power supply, did the fan "****" alittle ? Make sure that the power supply is not too dirt.
When you power the CPU on, does any light comes on at all ?

I have an emachine t2885, when i hit the power button, i dont get any power to the computer, but the keyboard, speakers and monitor lights go on, but no power to the computer, help

I'm going to guess pwr supply 12 volts side. The 5 volts side lights up keyboard and mouse; both get replaced when they fix (replace) the power supply.

The hard drive and dvd player us the 12volts side.

Check 12 volt supply side if low disconnect hard drive check voltage again,, if 12 volts hard drive bad,,, if low disconnect dvd,,, if 12volts connect hard drive,,,if 12 volts dvd bad. of course this scenerio can go the opposite way. Do you know how to use a multimeter? Black box maintence is exciting.

Emachines e4026 non-responsive

I don't think it's an overheating CPU. It would stay on for a bit longer if it was that. My best guess is a power supply issue. Either your power supply is bad, or more likely something is pulling too much power from it. Emachines are notorious for using the bare minimum hardware... possibly the extra hard drive is pulling more juice than the power supply can handle, so it shuts down. Try disconnecting power to the new hard drive and see if the machine comes up. If it does, you need a new, higher wattage power supply.

I have a emachines s2485. Couldn't turn on one day so I replaced the power supply. Yhe power now comes on with the fans and light on the mother board but I see no activity on the hard drive light. Is it...

Try refreshing all the connections on the motherboard first like ATX power supply, SATA cables, RAM, etc. Then turn the computer on again, touch the HDD and feel if there's vibration, this means that your hard drive is active. Also, try resetting the CMOS, by removing the battery, but before doing this, make sure to turn off the PC and remove the power cable connected to the power supply. After approx. 10 secs attach the battery again, and turn on the computer, you may need to input the correct time and date. Hope this helps.

Make sure you reconnected to power to the hard drive when you changed out your power supply. Outside of that, I gotta go with stoneheaded. Need a lot more information here.

Powering up

Possible that the defective power supply has caused damage to the motherboard or processor. Check replacement p/s for correct operation if its ok problem is most likely the motherboard/CPU which would require replacement

Emachine t2642 power supply

Apparently this model has a bad motherboard, which manifests as a power warning and eventually a refusal to boot up. You can replace the power supply (as far as I know, any generic one 250-watt or better will work) but it's unlikely to help. You can buy a new motherboard (and new power supply, if you want to) direct from eMachines, but it's also likely to fail pretty soon. Your best bet is to get a new computer (NOT an eMachines one) and put your hard drive in as a slave so you can get your data off.

Emachine power supply

Unfortunately, E-Machines are well known for their power supply problems. I have a room full of them.

Let me guess, you can hear something rattling around in the power supply, right?

When this happens, a component blows cleanly off of the board inside, and sends a voltage spike to the mainboard.

With any luck, the hard drive logic board wasn't damage, and you can recover your data with another PC.
