LG Dryer cracked drum on Model DLE5977W - Dryers

I have an LG #DLE5977S Dryer. The dyer has always been a little noisy.

a couple of weeks ago the noise changed. I pulled of the top cover and found the rear of the drum has several cracks. It looks like about the last 3/4 of an inch of the drum was not welded. Now the drum is not round when it rotates. I am going to call LG on 12/22/08.

My LG DLE5977W dryer was starting to thump after inspecting the interior we found a crack. I now find that this seem to be acommon problem. Are there any recalls for this problem and how do you get into the dryer to replace the drum and rollers.

  • jhufman Mar 31, 2009

Have you determined how to get lg to cover the replacement of the drum? I have the same crack in my drum.

  • Felicia Hohle Jan 22, 2013

I also had the thumping in my DLEO442W LG dryer. It is 6 yrs old. Upon checkiing we found it was the drum seem splitting. We ordered a new drum. This one isn't stainless but I'm sure it'll last as long as the rest of the dryer. Check around for the best price. We found one low price but it had an additional $50 oversize shipping fee. We found another one, through Sears Parts, that was totaled out less. No real problems installing it. Did end up with extra screws, that always seems to happen. That was because we took it apart a week ago and just got the replacement today. So repaired it for $160.00. Cheaper than buying a new one. Felicia

Ordered drum from Sears parts. 3045EL1002D
Cost of 85$ + 15 to ship. It came in 5 days.

Here is how to do it on a DLE2514W. Takes about an hour. I only used a phillips screw

driver. Take your time and look over the situation. I hope that I rememberd

everything. Good luck.

4. Carefully unplug 4 plugs from back of control panel.
5. Looking at inside at the top. Remove wiring bundle from 2 guides.
6. Unplug wire from dryer light.

15. Almost done. Lift drum up at rear to free from rear rollers. Remove.

I got my replacement drum for less than $100 by doing this:

    Sears Parts Direct:http://parts.sears.com/partsdirect/getPr...

Google searched "sears parts direct coupon code" for a 10% off code.

Follow above directions, and you're good to go.

  • Felicia Hohle Jan 22, 2013

I also got one from Sears Parts direct but not that cheap. It wasn't to hard to replace the drum. My dryer is 6 yr old. Did end up with a few extra screws but that always seems to happen. Worth the trouble to replace it.

Thanks for the solution. I figured out how to remove the drum the other day. Since this is a ongoing problem with the drum i figured a new one is going to fail someday so i took my cracked drum to a weld shop and had them tack weld in a few locations (inside and outside) and fix the crack at the seam. My cost was $30. I installed it and it seems to be working great.

SOURCE: LG DLE5977W electric dryer hums when attempting to restart

This is usually the motor but not always. Remove the belt. Check for obstructions in the blower fan housing. Manually rotate the shaft of the motor.
If the motor is very stiff, or impossible to rotate manually, and the blower fan housing is clear, you need to replace the motor. If the motor rotates freely, run the motor momentarily with the belt removed and the blower in place. If the motor runs fine with the belt removed, there may be a problem with the idler pulley or the clothes drum. Try to rotate the drum by hand. If it is very difficult to move, correct any problem with the rollers, pulley, rear bearing, then reassemble the dryer and try it again. If the motor hums but doesn't rotate on its own even with the belt removed--yet you can turn it freely by hand--you usually need to replace the motor or the motor start capacitor. Need to know how to remove drum on LG model DLE5977W

Try this: Most dryers tops are held in position with a spring clip(s). Pop the top up being careful of the finish.

You will soon discover the process for holding the front panel on --- generally spring clip(s) or screws or tabs or combination thereof.

Be careful of the door safety switches and wires.

The drum should come free of the dryer as you remove the front panel

I hope this answers your question

Thumping sound from loose drum

Your problem sounds like drum rollers have flat spots on them or in need of lubrication.
If you have a front loading machine, Unplug the dryer, remove the front of the dryer. This will expose the drum and belt, remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers.
Check your rollers for flat spots, if they have flat spots on them replace them.
If they don't then they probably only need lubrication. Lubricate the shaft of the roller with a good grade of machine oil such as 3 in One oil. Reassemble the dryer, plug back in. This should solve you noise problem.
Good Luck,
I hope this helps

LG DRYER MAKING CLUNKING NOISE

Clunking could be from bad rollers or cracked drum. Check the drum seam for a crack. If its the rollers you can do the same thing as drum replacement only order the rollers. I got my parts from Sears parts. The below is for a 2514 but should be close for yours.

Look inside the drum at the seam, front and back side. The weld on the stainless steel drum may have cracked. You would need to replace part number 3045EL1002F. It is moderatly difficult to replace.
