Yes. To cut cost Sony offered the 40 GB but the system was not backwards compatible. By upgrading to 60 or 80 GB you will have compatibility. Check www.us.playstation.com to make sure the games you want to be compatible are listed.

Can ps2 games be played on a ps3 and if yes how

Hi, the only ps3 that can play ps2 games is the 40gig one this is the only one they made that was backwards compatible you could also play ps1 games on this ps3, how ever they are hard to come by now and the only real place you can get one from is the well know auction site.
The other thing you could try would be to go into your nearest game shop and ask them if they can get a backwards compatible ps3 they are out their but are hard to come buy new.

their is also ways of changing the firmware on your ps3 to accept the old games how ever doing this is illegal and i cant give you any advice on this as its banned by the site, how ever if you use google and type in how do i make my ps3 backwards compatible this will then list loads of sites that can offer the help your looking for

Playing PS2 Games on a PS3 - Check Backwards Compatibility

Not all PS3 consoles have the capability to play PS2 games. Sony have removed PS2 compatibility altogether from the new PS3 slim and the later version PS3s only have limited capability to play PS One games.

This Tip is written to help you determine if your console is backward compatible for PS2 games.

First locate the model number of your PlayStation 3 system by finding the bar code sticker at the back of the console. Underneath the bar code you will see the 11-digit serial number followed by the model number which begins with "CECH".

Models that have PS2 game compatibility are first generation consoles and the versions are 80GB, 60GB and 20GB. These PS2 compatible consoles will all have 4 USB ports which is another useful identifier.

See below for a breakdown of the model numbers that are compatible with running PS2 games;

1) Model No: CECHE01 - These are 80 GB models with 4 USB ports. (Please note 80GB models with 2 USB ports are not compatible).

2) Model No: CECHA01 60 GB models

3) Model No: CECHB01 20 GB models

Another important factor here is the PS2 games themselves.

Even if you have one of these consoles, a PS2 game may run fine on one version say the 60GB but may not work on the 80GB.

If you have identified that you have one of these consoles and want to check if a particular game is compatible with it use the link below. You can enter the exact console you are using - then enter the PS2 game you want to play;
http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus

This will give a definitive answer on compatibility between a particular PS2 game you want to play and the actual console you have.

I do hope this Tip has clarified the issues for you.

Is there anyway of getting older version of ps3 os that is backwards compatible

If I understand your request, backwards compatibility can not be achieved by installing a different version of the PS3 OS.
You have to buy a 20GB, 60GB or 80GB model that supports backward compatibility.
A quick search of Google Products turns up a bunch of backward compatible PS3s for sale.

Can I play PS2 games on my brand new PS3? I bought the 120 GB today, Is there another model I should exchange for if this is going to be a problem. The owners manual refered me to this website.

Hi,

The 120GB console does not have backward compatibility with PS2 games unfortunately. For a full explanation on what PS3 consoles are able to play PS2 games, please view this FixYa Tip.

If the solution helps, please do remember to leave a vote for it.

Thanks.

I bought my son a ps3 with 120mb memory for xmas after being told that it will also play ps2 games. Now we can't get the ps2 games to work. is a download needed ? or was I lied to by sales person ?

Well sorry to tell you this but the 120 gig ps3 does not have any backwards capabilities whatsoever. There is no downloads to make ps2 games work. Either the sales person bold faced lied to you, or they had no clue what they were selling. Sony only came out with 2 systems that have backwards capabilities, the 60 and 80 gig systems, although they are limited and the 80 requires a download. Sorry for the headache, if I were you I would give that sales person a good piece of my mind.

How do i get ps2 games to play on my ps3

The only way how to play PS2 games on PS3 is to have the correct version of the console. Either your Playstation 3 can play PS and PS2 games or it can't, and there's not much to do about it. Most of the PS3 models simply cannot play older titles as they lack the necessary hardware and firmware. However, a few models do have backwards compatibility. The 20 Gb, 60 Gb, and original 80 Gb models all have backwards compatibility, either through hardware or software emulation. The other models lack backwards compatibility, so even knowing how to play PS2 games on PS3 won't help you out much here.

Can u play ps2 games on the 40gig ps3?

No, the 40 gig doesn't come with backwards compatibility like the 60 or 80 gig one does. Unfortunately the only way to play them is to get one of the other versions. Although, there are rumors circulating that Sony might release a patch that allows it.

PS3

As of yet, i havent heard of any way to do this. The 60gb and 80gb versions have a different chipset that allows backward compatibility game play. The 40gb version does not have that chipset. Although you never know, one day they might come out with a software "emulator" to play the older games on these consoles.

Ps3 Won'T play ps2 games.

The newer lower priced PS3's dont have ps2 backward compatibility. They don't have the built in hardware to do it hence the cheaper price. Maybe sony will release a software emulator for these units if enough people complain.....but one can only wait and see. The 80 GB higher priced one does however have the backward compatibility.
