Hi, I have the same issue with mine, I have tried changing settings and nothing changed. At the moment the only thing that I can do I view photos that are already in the memory card. I'm really not sure what the issue is?

I have the same problem - have not used the camera for 8 months and can only view old pictures on the memory stick but NOT take new pictures? Can anybody help?

  • Anonymous Sep 26, 2008

I have the exact same problem, i'm just going to send in to sone support!

  • Warren Williams Oct 08, 2008

I just went to the link you provided. Sony will fix the problem until mid 2009. They are sending me a call tag. THANK YOU for posting this.

I thought I had an expensive paperweight on my hands since SONY never sent out a notice to owners I thought mine was an isolated incident.

Now it will be a camera again.

I've had the same problem since last year. Thought all hope was lost or I would have had to pay $300 to get it fixed. THANK YOU for posting this. BTW - I was just on the site and it mentioned that they will continue this service now until September 2009.

my problem is that i am located in australia...and the recall only counts if you are in the USA. What a shame...I loved this camera, and it just died on me too.

I just experienced the same problem. Took some photographs, turned the camera off, then turned it on a couple of minutes later and got a completely blank screen other than the menu items. I am able to play back pictures and movies on the memory stick. I can record a movie but only get the sound and a black image. I've just had a chat with Sony Support who were very helpful. They provided me with this link:

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-item.pl?news_id=161&mdl=DSCF717

I will be sending my camera off for repair at a cost of $15. The site indicates that they will continue to offer this service until March 31, 2009.

Based upon the level of service and relative ease to get the information and get the camera fixed this is a big positive for Sony.

HEADS UP! Here's the web link with the info from Sony. http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-item.pl?mdl=DSCF717&news_id=161 . The recall on the bad CCD chips EXPIRES SEP. 30, 2008. If it goes past this date you still might be able to get the repair for free by filing a complaint with your states Bureau Of Consumer Protection (Pa.) or Division Of Consumer Affairs (Fl.). These offices are usually located under your states Attorney General's Office & jurisdiction. Sony didn't send any recall notices to anybody, even the registered owners of these camera's. Took court action to force them to pay for the repairs Boy are they going to pay for their deception.

No picture on screen when switched on

You have not given enough information. Are you trying to see
recorded photos or expecting to see the image from the lens?
You normally have an option to either use the view finder OR the
LCD display. It usually defaults to the view finder and you must activate the LCD with a button.

Canon XSi not powering up

if it has a view finder make sure in the settings that the image is set to show up on the LCD screen also make sure the batteries have a FULL charge which means at least 8 hours of uninterrupted charging before use.

My guess is that with most nice digi cams it is set to not show the image in the LCD viewfinder but rather the actual real time with your eye view finder. look around the menu if you can and see what you can change as far as view finding and if i didn't help please specify the problem a little more and i will be glad to do whatever i can to help.

Is the battery dead? Try taking it out and charging it, then put it back into the camera.

Also, you can try using another battery of the same type.

The Sony may have the same problem, Search on the Internet for key words:
Sony DSC717 ccd advisory. This camera was made in the time when the ccds had a problem (1999 to 2002).
You may want to call Sony for this one.

There's a good possibilty that your mode switch is broken. Same thing happened to my Z6. I was able to source replacement switches, and can replace them.

Digital Camera and Video Phone Number 1 800 222 7669 - it's automated, just say your model number, then "no" to accessories, then "no" to connection problems, then "picture" for ccd issues. Its that easy!

Powershot S1 IS trouble shooting in images of lcd monitor

Try playing back pictures you know were captured properly ( either with another properly working camera or with your camera before the problem with quality has appeared ). If the image is ok in playback but 'noisy' in capture mode then the CCD sensor is faulty /on its way out. Ask Canon if they repair CCD faults on this model free of charge.

Canon Powershot S1 IS - Both in LCD and View finder - only blank is coming

Sorry this aint a solution. I too have the same problem as Mr.Gandhi is facing. I too bought this camera approximately 2 years ago.Since last cupla weeks, im facing this problem on a random note...I cud take a few snaps in between and upload without any problem but again the camera could not capture new images even with a set of 4 new batteries. Whenever i switch the mode to take snaps from preview mode (which is still working fine), the LCD or the view finder becomes dark with some blue colored horizontal lines appearing as if its because of some kinda interference!
