You have gone backwards in operating system and it is possible that the driver for the notebook is not compatible for win xp
as win xp is no longer being supported by microsoft it is better to stay on vista or install win 7 as all downloads are now orientated to the later operation systems

First lets try uninstalling the device, then on the device manager window right click on something and select scan for hardware changes, also a reboot might be required if this doesnt solve it. then lets find new drivers.

also lets try deleteing the lower and upper filters from your windows registry il post you a video tutorial in a moment.

1) uninstall your dvr from device manager
2) write REGEDIT at RUN
3) look for UPPERFILTER using search in the edit menu. After you have found it, delete this registry
4) repeat the same for LOWERFILTER
5) Go to the device manager, scan for hardware changes. Win Vista will now successfully install your DVR

I have a Compaq Presario V6500 laptop. Its been giving lot of troubles right from the 13 month (warranty was for 12 months). My DVD drive was able to read only CDs and no DVDs. I was still continuing...

wow a model stated, but NO OS , sad. why post with NO OS?
CIRCA 2007 (carbon dated by me)
NO MEDIA Stated just DVD (nuttn)

windows VISTA 32, that it? many were that year, 2010 or older
please tell the poster why anyone on earth warranties any 7 year old computer? must be wild men with cash to spend, ? endless?
who does that, or did you buy a service contract, from someone?
a service contract is not a warranty from HP not at all.

the DVD drive has name remove the drive read the label there.
post it and we can tell you what it can do an can not.
or ask HP that, we are not HP.
must BE XP after all only XP messes up DVD and many other things and needs, XP reg hot patches, sure.
why not upgrade this XP trash PC.
never ever RUN XP now, its a virus magnet, to you read the news
on COUNTERATTACKS, last 3 months on XP???? sad no?

or is this VISTA, it to has problems but IIRC DVDs work in VISTA OK. VISTA to must be fully updated from MS, (they shut down updates to vista last month( but there is one more patch from MS and is kEY to your survival with VISTA, ask HP or MS for it now)

as you can see DAY 1 this PC had 5 optical drive options with the limits clearly stated on page 3 here
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01278450

not the massive NO's on the the first one, cheap one...!!!!

here is the key to testing DVD, unstated by you what you did.
1: MAKE SURE THE DVD DRIVE DOES WHAT YOU WANT.
THE drive needs a patch from HP to read some movies
we remove the drive read the label then read HPs spec on what you have.
2; You never once told what DVD is in you hand..
a movie from the store on DVD or on BlueRay.
a DVD install disk
A DVD you made on other PC say burned to DVD-R media some home movies, say MP4s whata?
or what I can make or buy 100 of other forumated DVD in vast ways. some work other dont for vast reasons.
tell me one reason, one disk, tell what the disk is.
like DVD from store, with Gone with the wind on it,or WIZ of OZ.

3: then we go to HP.com and load all drivers seen on there site
for you PC (only) and your unstated OS, , yes they must match.

see this.
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/compaq-presario-v6500-notebook-pc-series/3369426

if your media is ok (do not use DVD recorded disk now, as a test)
and the Drive is DVD drive, the label on it is clear as day.?
and the OS is still HP loaded and not infected or erased using some Microsoft disk then, load all the missing drivers see above.
and it will work, , if not the DVD drive is bad.

next time POST OS.
and tell which of the 6 optical drives you have,
some folks even put in other drives here, if you bought it used
it can be vast other drives here,
once we know that, we can get it to work, only if its still good.
after 10 years, many now are filthy optics or weak laser diode.

I unable to install Xp in my compaq cq61-132tu. The install option just doesn't get highlighted. Also, i don't have another computer.

I assume you are attempting a "downgrade" to Xp from Vista, since this laptop does not come with XP.
From the Compaq information page:
  1. HP does NOT support XP for consumer notebooks, so if you have any difficulties regarding XP, do not expect HP will help you.
  2. HP may demand you to install back VISTA if you have hardware problem to troubleshoot it.
An option to consider-put your original Vista hdd away and install new one for XP.
  3. Some of the notebook features may not work in XP due to uncertified licenses pointed in this guide.
  4. Microsoft has released three (3) Service Packs for XP, use only SP2 for the first trial. Why? Since many of XP drivers are released based on XP-SP2.
  5. Always make Vista Recovery cd/dvd before downgrade to XP. see it here
  6. You have a folder with drivers & programs that may prove very helpful after XP downgrade.
Copy folder C:\Swsetup to DVD Before formatting your hdd.
  7. If you have a pre-SP2 XP cd, get the full SP to Integrate with Nlite: SP2 Nlite HERE
The help guide for downgrading is here. There is a lot of information on this process written there.

However, if what you want is a an XP look and feel so you can compute the way you used to, change the Vista to look like XP in the display properties.
If you are trying to run non-Vista software, try running it in compatibility mode. To do this, right click on the program files and select properties and then locate compatibility..

Sound card dvr for presario v6500 with Windows XP

This is from HP's website:
If an HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario, delivered with Vista isdowngraded to the XP operating system, HP may not provide drivers.Users are encouraged to search the Microsoft web site for informationon downgrading to XP and locating updated drivers.

See Issues with Downgrading HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario PCs to Windows XP and Restoring Windows Vista for more detailed information.

The Service Manual may tell you the chipset of the sound card(but I didn't see it just part numbers). Also, you can run this utility here(look for audio in the output), in the event that you can't figure out the chipset otherwise.

According to this post, it appears that it may be part of windows update, you can try that.

Windows os

Its true. the Bios or HDD driver wont allow you to install Win XP on it.. This BIOS is compatible with only Win Vista. The only easy way to do it is by creating 2 partitions while installing vista. once vista is installed- install XP with Dual boot and than format the vista partition.
