I have one strong warning about using any electronic device near these Lcd panels. Never use a cell phone anywhere near them. My niece was using hers near it one day & it was not long after that my same model monitor started doing this. Hope this is helpful.

You will be hard pressed to find a spare part for anything from Dell apart from through their warranty centre. IE: sign over your house and first born child.

The good news is any local tech will be able to repair the original board you have fairly cheaply.

In your case, it will be just the capacitors are beginning to fail and therefore send unstable voltage to the controller board.
The capacitors are cheap, it's the labour that costs.

If your electronically minded, then you ill be able to do it yourself easily. The other option to save money is to remove the power board yourself and just get them to take care of that, then you reassemble it again.

Main Menu and lock cymbol keep coming on screen. How do I get rid of them?

Wendy ohlsen, I know you really like your E173FP, but it is quite "old" in CCFL back-lit lcd display years. It could be 4 to 6 years old. Retrevo .com lists unit as "time to retire" ,, Please reply back with the "date of manufacture" from rear of unit. Tell me if unit has a "lay on floor" power adapter or just a plain old "line cord" that plugs into the wall. When "strange stuff" starts to appear on screen, problem is most likely inside the unit on the power supply board. Let me know if your husband or boyfriend can assist you with an internal visual investigation of unit's power supply board. See YOUTUBE video clips of repairs being done on typical Dell units first. Pay particular attention to BAD CAPACITORS being replaced with new ones!!! 12fixlouie

My E173FP Dell monitor keeps popping up a menu box and I can't make it stop. Any suggestions?

There must be somethng shorting out the menu button. To troubleshoot, the monitor needs to be opened and the button board and cable needs to be checked for problems.

I have a dell e173fp monitor taht is have

Use the dell monitor on another computer, if its having the same issues on another computer then you know the monitor is bad. If its not having the same issues on another computer then you know its a problem with the original computer.

With the monitor turning on and off, if the problem is the monitor for sure then it could either be the lcd screen is starting to go bad or puffy capacitors on either the main board or the power board.

Best way to find out if you can do it. Take the back off of the monitor you will then see a metal shielding cover, take the screws out of that and it will expose the power board which is where you normally would connect the power cord to and the main board that controls the voltages and how info is displayed onto the screen.

A good capacitor has a nice flat silver top on it. A bad capacitor has a silver top that looks puffy or pregnant. It will look like its bulging.

If you find any bad ones, you would need to take a soldering iron and get the bad ones out and make sure you replace them with new ones that have the same UF rating and the same or more in voltage, you can get the numbers off of the capacitor.

The striped side of the capacitor needs to face the marked side on the board.

Again keep in mind if you don't find any bad capacitors on either board then that means the screen is going bad and it would be more cost efficient to replace the monitor then to repair it at that point.

Dell E173FP Screen blinking red, green, blue, white

The monitor is probably on protection.

To start unplug monitor from power and from computer and test computer with different monitor to find out if it is monitor or computer fault.

If it is computer fault and no video signal , then test:

  • Video cable.
  • Video adapter on PC (sometimes integrated on motherboard)
  • Motherboard.

If it is monitor fault , then the monitor is on protection.

When on protection you keep having a flashing led on front of the monitor , and monitor turning off by itself after a while, that indicates a fault condition.

The flashing light indicates a diagnostic state called protection.
When the Monitor goes on protection there are only two possible causes.

1The internal circuits are jammed because of electrostatic charges accumulating on capacitors, or because of a wrong voltage read by the main chip on your monitor controller board. this started the protection circuit.

2 The protection circuit detected a wrong voltage or a broken contact, identified an internal fault and kicked in , starting the flashing light.

If you are in situation one, then the monitor will reset just unplugging power cord for one or two hours, sometimes even minutes.

If you are in situation 2 , then there is an internal fault.

Common faults that can occur are a blown capacitor on power board, faulty inverter board, faulty input board, or a fault on LCD Digital Controller board.

Check also the video cable or any external connection cable, if the cable is shorting, or the connector is bad, you can get same flashing state because of the video cable.

Try moving the video cable, and if the cable is not built in, then also try a replacement cable.

If under warranty contact the manufacturer ringing the number on the user manual

If you want to repair at your own expenses, just locate any good qualified repairer.

This could be either down to an internal fuse blown or the main board or the capacitor on the power supply could be faulty.

Dell E173FP temperature sensitive 17" monitor

No. The best way is to take off the rear panel and insulator cover. Look on the board for "p/n: xxxxxxx" for the exact part number. I've found this to be the best way to ensure the correct board.
Also, once you're inside, you could see how many CCFLs you have.

You need a new backlight or inverter board. To check for a new lamp, shine a bright light at the front of the monitor and see if you can see an image.
