I have just discovered that there is no fix in Vista. You can not playback in real time without an additional sound card. The Vista mixer is not as useful as the mixer in XP. I am going today to see if the sound cards actually work. I will let you know if they do.

Microphone not working

Hello Weber913,
Below are steps to troubleshoot and resolve your microphone issues. If you have any further questions you can email at my email address listed below.

Test the Microphone

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Sound Recorder.
In Windows XP, you will need to select Multimedia (or Entertainment).
  2. Click the Record button, and speak into the microphone.
The green waveform should react to your voice.
  3. To end the recording, click Stop.
  4. To hear your recording, click the Play button.

Check physical connections

  1. Verify that the microphone is connected to the red microphone jack for the sound card on the back of the computer and not the microphone jack for the modem. The microphone will not record if it is connected to the Mic jack on the modem.
  2. Test the microphone on another computer using Sound Recorder as in Step 1.

Check the volume control and mute properties.

Double-click the Speaker icon in the System Tray.

  1. Make sure the Volume Controls (or Master Out controls) are at least midway on all levels.
  2. Make sure there are no checks in the Mute boxes.
  3. Test the microphone using Sound Recorder as in Step 1.

Set Recording to Mic/Microphone

  1. Double-click the Speaker icon in the System Tray
  2. Click Options in the menu at the top of the window.
  3. Click Properties.
  4. Choose Recording in the Adjust Volume For section. Do not choose Playback in the Adjust Volume for section. Choosing Playback in conjunction with unmuting the mic may cause loud feedback during recordings.
  5. Ensure that Mic/Microphone has a checkmark next to it.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Test the microphone using Sound Recorder as in Step 1.

Reinstall Sound, Video and Game Controller Drivers

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System and then click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Click the plus (+) sign next to Sound, Video and Game Controllers.
  4. Click each entry one at a time and then click Remove, repeating the steps until the Sound, Video and Game Controllers category is removed.
  5. Close all open windows.
  6. Reboot the computer.
The sound card will be detected and you will be prompted to reinstall its drivers.
  7. Test the microphone using Sound Recorder as in Step 1.

My microphone on Dell Latitude D505 does not speak out eg. on skype? Can u assist Thanks

We need to determine if your mike works at all. Lets start by launching Sound Recorder from START --> PROGRAMS -->ACCESSORIES --> ENTERTAINMENT --> SOUND RECORDER. With that application going, click the record button and talk. See if you can record anything and then play it back. If it works, the issue is something with Skype, if you get no sound, you've got either a problem with the mike itself (not likely) or a Windows driver problem or ...
...easiest fix, is that the mike is turned off in the volume control. Go to START --> PROGRAMS -->ACCESSORIES --> ENTERTAINMENT --> VOLUME CONTROL. When it comes up, click on OPTIONS --> PROPERTIES. You should see an option of displaying playback (default) or recording volume. Select recording. You can now confirm that there is a check mark next to digital mike which turns it on.
Hope this helps!

My microphone records the sounds on my computer and plays them directly back through the speakers. How can I eliminate the microphone playback and have someone else hear me on something such as skype?

double click on the volume on the taskbar (System Tray - Next to clock) and Controls for Playback will open. If you can't see Microphone Volume here, click Options- Properties - and in Playback Volume list - Select Microphone by ticking against it and press OK. You will see the Microphone Volume on screen. Just tick inside the mute box of Microphone. Now the audio from Microphone will not play but you can still record it.

Audio on Dell Webcam Central And voice record isn't working

I have a Dell 1545 with Dell web cam central & I've had this issue. The problem is that Dell web cam central installs it's own microphone settings onto your laptop called something like Dell web cam Live!. This isn't the built in microphone in my laptop & maybe not yours either. You have to change the settings for your computer system & Dell web cam central. Go to start> control panel> sound> recording .. on mine there is an option for Microphone "High Definition Audio Device" ... that is the built in mic. You want that for your default & apply it. Also .. as a side note .. I disabled the web cam central Live! microphone completely from this window. Then open Dell web cam central & go to the "Record Video's" option. In the middle of this is an orange button with a video camera icon. Next to this on the same button is a little arrow pointing down .. click that. Under microphone .. choose Microphone "High Definition Audio Device" just like the sound option in control panel. I've done this & it's completely fixed. I can record videos with sound & use my built in mic in voice/video chat.

Are you trying to record something? What's the issue? You obviously have drivers installed for the sound card if it works..
See sound recorder link here and here.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

No Real Time Sound from USB Port in Headphones

The problem is due to the design of the DELL Laptop itself. It is not dsigned to monitor the incoming signal. I bought a cheap Behringer UCA202 USB-Audio Interface. It provides for real time monitoring the incoming sound. I can also hear the accompanying music while I play along with pre-existing tracks. It's not the highest quality but it was only 25$ so well worth the price.
