My hp all-in-one printer reinstalls device driver every time I plug printer into USB port, and makes a new copy. I'm thinking it is something with vista? Any thought? I've tried reinstalling printer software.
Hello, you will need to complete the add new hardware wizard, sometimes the drivers are corrupted and the wizard ends before all installation takes place (undertaker02 this is also for you) Do this:-Log on to your computer by using an administrator account. 2. Click Start, and then click Run. 3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK. 4. Locate and click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\LPTENUM 5. Right-click the registry key, and then click Delete. 6. Under Confirm Key Delete, click Yes. 7. Close Registry Editor, and then restart your computer. When Windows XP restarts, it will detect the printer and install support for it. After the printer is installed, it will no longer be detected each time you start Windows XP.

Some motherboard or operating systems have problems if you leave usb devices plugged in. They don't recognize that the device is still there and ignore it. These are referred to as "Legacy USB devices". There are a couple of things to try.
Make sure the problem isn't the printer if you can. If you have another computer just plug it in long enough to for the operating system to recognize something has been plugged in.
On this computer giving you the problem. unplug the usb cable and insert into a different USB port. Usually this is enough to "fix" it and make it usable.
Next is to unplug the usb and reboot the computer a few times. Then insert into a different usb port.
Past this point if it still isn't working then you need to go to control panel-system-hardware manager-usb devices and delete all entries under the usb header. Then reboot. This forces the operating system to find all the usb ports and reinstalls the drivers. Then plug in the usb and it should work again.
I have a similar problem on Vista Home Premium (SP1) with the
all-in-one HP psc2355. Driver once in a while (why - I don't know!) has to reinstall itself after reboot.
Tried clean installs, driver updates you name it.To no avail. I have multiple
instances of the driver installed now. Only the latest entry actually works. Can't find any resolution for it anywhere. Only happens with the HP USB driver.
First does ink come out of your cartridges? Take a damp towel (water)
and firmly press the bottom of the cartridge on the paper towel. Black
should be a rectangle, and color should provide you with all three
